I'm looking for ways to ban people forever (or for a long time) that are better than the traditional cookie and IP banning techniques, which are easily worked around.
Can PHP get someone's MAC address and ban them forever?
If not - I've seen traffic tracker sites that can tell which city and country a user is from. Couldn't you just ban the whole city if one dude from that city is screwing up your site? How does PHP do that?

Very irrational but ban an ip range.
You would basically be banning xxx.xxx.xxx..
xxx.xxx.xxx.yyy
This would be done with an htaccess probably, although php could do it.

That sounds kind of mean. You might as well ban the entire world, as anyone can use a proxy outside of their IP range.

Banning the whole world would certainly keep the riffraff out.

You pretty much can't ban somebody by IP and guarantee that person will be unable to get to your site. All they have to do is use Tor or some proxy services to get outta your banned IP range (or go to a coffee shop and connect from there, etc..).
Now if you had a login system you could ban them using that... but then how would you stop them from registering a new account? It'd be pretty difficult to ban somebody who was really determined.

Yes and make sure to block all access from other worlds to, otherwise somebody from say Mars might be able to get in:beer:

couldnt you use the ssh2lib and the ssh2_methods_negotiated command to get the MAC address?
http://us3.php.net/manual/en/function.ssh2-methods-negotiated.php
not sure ...i think you would need to connect to an ssh sftp server....
im sure theres prolly something...maybe its the server MAC address?
and its seems kinda a hassel....best would prolly just ip ban...even though you can get around it :/
