this is just a guess, but cant you just change the extension from .wmv to .mpg?

you get an error when windows media player opens up, but it will go ahead and play
that's kind of a last resort

thanks grimdeath
this may be a stupid question, but is MPEG1 and MPEG2 (VCD and SVCD) the same thing as just a regular run of the mill *.mpg format? in other words, will people have to have special codecs installed to view the file once I convert it from the *.wmv?

svcd is a mpg2 format and yes people will need a svcd codec in order to view svcd format files, i sugggest making it into a mpg file since its the best solution so everyone can see no matter which OS theyre using :beam:

people will need the wmv coded - which comes bundled with windows media player, so it shouldnt be a problem (exept for macs =))

1. If you just rename it, it will still play because there is a header at the beginning of the file to tell it which codec to use however it is still a .wmv.
2. WMV is only going to work with Windows, just like mlk said.
3. MPEG-2 is pretty widely known and used. I would never use MPEG-1 because it is the crappiest format known to man.
4. Check out DiVX or XviD.
How are you trying to convert it? You need a video render to recompile it you know?

okay here's the deal...it's just a stupid little video that i made with window's movie maker (hey, it's free and easy)...it will only let you save it in the *.wmv format.
the only reason i want to convert it is b/c geocities won't upload *.wmv -- if anybody knows any free hosts, without banner ads (popups are okay i guess), that will let you upload *.wmv AND will let you upload files bigger than 5 mb let me know.
i don't have much experience with this video stuff, but it shouldn't be that hard of a thing to do. i may just rename the file extension...that would be the easiest solution.
