Itunes vs mp3

So ok here goes.

I use itunes alot, and I also buy music through it. When you buy, it ends up as .m4p format.

My phone can't play that, it only plays mp3s.. and when I try to convert the m4p through itunes it sez something about protected file, cant convert.

Any solution to this? Don't care if I have to breach some ToS somewhere.
