I have a really nice workstation, but it's large and noisy and it takes up a lot of space, and I kind of want to get rid of it and get a laptop. I suspect that I might not end up doing it, but if I were to, does anyone have any recommendations of totally kick *** laptops that could (kind of) compete?

You could easily compete but then you lose the whole mobile part. Heck anything larger than a 15.4 your losing your whole mobile factor.

Alienware 1200p displays (1920x1200) Plus a 8800M GTX for those long hours in a 3d work.
Dell (I love my M1330, runs CS3 and other softwares great).

//edit, oh yea get the M1530 :fab:

My friend just got the M1530...amazing piece of laptop right there. Except, I still think the M1330 is a better value, and still looks cooler since all they did was stretch the 13.3" frame to a 15.4" frame...not the best way to do it IMO. If you need 3D stuff, HP has some nice "Workstation" laptops with kickass Quadro cards inside...Otherwise, that Alienware probably should fit the bill, the really expensive one that is. :P

Hmm... now that I think about it the Vaio FZ is probably your best bet. Now that blu-ray is the new format you can use your laptop to watch movies.

Plus later on you can burn blu-ray discs which no one but you can read for a few years. :) or store a good part of your hard drive. Hmm... it also has a 2.6ghz processor.

I agree, all though it depends on your budget and which OS you're most familiar with. If you may be interested, it will be worth it to wait at least a month because MBPs are long overdue for an update.

I got my MBP on Christmas '06 and it still seems like one of the fastest ones out there now (2.33Ghz, 4GB ram).

Ironically, we don't have the slightest clue to what he'll be doing on his new laptop....that would pretty much decide which one right there. You need to be more specific than just Workstation.

I got mine in October. 2.6 and 4gigs of Ram.

uh...heh, not to burst your bubble but any laptop with a core 2 duo 2.33ghz -2.6ghz with 3-4 gigs of ram would probably preform just as well as your Macbook Pros...then it's just a matter of OS preference.

Might as well complete the circle of all major brands: I like some of the Lenovo machines. They're intense.

I don't really care about it being particularly mobile, I just don't want to have to have it constantly plugged in with a monitor taking up space and cords and crap, thats really more the ticket. I mostly just do boring stuff, with some Photoshop and gaming thrown in, so I'm leaning towards a mid level Alienware. I'm currently seeing how much I can pawn my Desktop for, heh.

Oh, definitely won't be getting an Apple, they're nice but I want a PC.

Er....it's supposed to be a budget level gaming computer even lower priced than the Asus G1s...no way it's "good enough" for a work station when its designed to be priced lower than $1K. In no way is it a bad computer, but well...I think he's looking for something with more UMPH to it.

Here's my addition:

Random fact - HP and Lenovo now sell notebooks with SUSE and FreeDos...cool? Guess Dell started a trend?

For some odd reason the HP site is soo slow today. Be warned.

^ It matches the 3.6 dual core with 4g ram that i have as a desktop... Are you sure you got the right lappie there? The RRP is $1889.

I don't know where your getting your data from...here's several links to show my point including the price from NEWEGG.com. I'd be the first one to usually suggest Asus, but well they don't make good workstation stuff. Notice the Asus M51Sn-S1 is only $1,049 US.

Here's forum threads about it. First one is just general info...first impressions seem like it's a "consumer" laptop. Also, the 2nd one has benchmarks...basically a mid-range GPU. So cheaper gaming on the go.

Ah, In AUS they ship with dual 2.5 centrinos and has a 5.2 vista rating, with the lowest being the aero desktop performance. Also my prices are in AUD, so about the same.

+1 I got the e1705, but I have my eye on a new laptop maybe the top shelf M series. Just got my wife a pink Vaio and its ok, but I think you do more high power stuff than she does.

now to go back and read what everyone else said and weed out the flames...lol

Just to add, every HP I had was loud, almost like those mini vacuum cleaners.

Cant go wrong with Alienware either.

Yea, I have a feeling hes gonna end up with an Alienware if he does purchase one.
This thread makes me think why we call them laptops... for one thing the e1705 is huge and well over an inch and a half thick, there is no way I would ever see someone using it on their lap  (nothing at you DDD, my bro has one also).

Simply said there are "Desktop Replacements" and "Laptops".

I think if you could sum this thread up it would go like this.

"ALIENWARE!!!!" "DELL-HP!!!" "ASUS!"

Then out of nowhere

"APPLE!!!!!!!!!!" :P
