This site uses their servers... the mysql seems to run pretty well even with the high traffic (only the forums the site is static).

This site does NOT use the grid servers. It's on a (dv) server.

I had the grid server for a little over a year. It was pretty bad. I can confirm slow MySQL. There's always issues with their DNS and mail as well.

I just got MT and every thing seems to be fine including MySQL. I think Kirupa should give use an insight into his experience with Media Temple.

Oh I see... yea that makes more sense. Seb its probably different because he doesn't use grid servers.

Bluehost are excellent, although occasionally you'll be on a slow server (a risk with shared hosting anyway), but if this is the case, ask to move to a different box and they'll do it for you with no questions asked.

Your experience is dated so stop posting about it. You're providing horridly incorrect information every single time you talk about your pre-now experience. If you drove a Honda Accord back in 1998, don't try to compare it to a Honda Accord in 2008.

Kirupa isn't on a (gs) he's on a (dv).

I can tell you from VERY hands on experience, we have 50+ clients on GridServers, and they're very good. Sure they may not have been great when they first came out... but I don't know many servers that haven't gone through that period, but they are extremely stable now. Not one of our clients has complained about their speed, or their email services. We have clients that range from getting their email from the webmail, to clients who religiously use their BlackBerry to get their email. None of which have complained. And the MySQL load times are just fine, and their servers can handle a good load of people as well. If you're expecting a lot of people to be on your site, use caching, but that's w/ any server. Also, (mt) provides one of, if not the best control panel for a web host. I've used lots of web hosts and I can say from my personal experience between the others I've been with, they have the easiest one to navigate. You also get full shell access to your (gs) if that's important to you (it is for me), full access to your php.ini and one buttons switching between php4 and php5 (if you needed it).

Another good host to go with is www.eleven2.com I don't want to go on about them to much, since you didn't really ask... but they're pretty top notch. My only bleh about them is they use CPanel as their primary control panel. But that's not really anything to cry about either.

that sounded pretty rude man. :2c:

Incidentally I was looking at signing up for the grid about a year ago, but after reading about exactly these kinds of issues from various sources decided not to spend a penny. If you can speak from personal, up to date experience simp, that they are up to speed now, i might just think about throwing my hat into the ring this year (coupla months time) as one of my new years resolutions was to re-use some of the stuff i build for clients and actually furnish myself with a site...

Well, it's true. I've never had an issue with my GS MT service except that it costs a pretty penny to maintain.

I suppose I had more of an issue with the control they offered than their actual servers, though, this was back when ss servers ruled.

Although I was going to ignore this thread—it wasn’t really started for suggestions—I might as well mention that Joyent (http://joyent.com) (formerly Textdrive (http://textdrive.com)) is without question, the best host on the planet. And damn can they scale your application.

Well it wasn't really meant to sound nice. But to keep slandering a company with false information just isn't cool. I know that "back in the day" they had little bit of issues w/ the mail servers, and the way they set up their DB cluster on the second GridServer. Most hosts have had some sort of issue. But to say that they are STILL like that, or even eluding to that, when they aren't at all, is just being mis-informed.

I agree, the (ss) was not good at all. The (gs) is a vast improvement over that tho.

(Oh, and since I didn’t mention it already: I’ve never heard anybody complain about Textdrive/Joyent. Just throwing that out there. :P)

Textdrive is annoying. They have some bot under the meme 'nokrev' spamming this forum about their services.

:)

You lose Jeff. Though, this is a completely hypocritical post. SliceHost!

Ha; as I said, I wasn’t even gonna post in this thread … but then I got personally addressed, first. No fair!

@Jeff: Thought you'd be interested to know that SliceHost uses OpenID now (optionally, of course). http://blog.slicehost.com/articles/2008/02/19/openid-comes-to-slicemanager
