i've just started to look into adding sound to my game, and... well, i don't know where the hell to begin :P i've done a bit of searching among game dev forums and i haven't really seen a lot of people talking about sound fx, where do you guys get yours? do you get them from websites, record them yourselves, create them with a synthesizer? and does anyone know of any good freeware for creating/editing software? any thoughts, advice, or useful links would be appreciated, thanks :)

I always made my own. You learn different sounds from different objecdts make great sound effects.

The only thing you really need to do is get a top of the line Sound Recorder or Microphone and grab any Open Source Sound Editing Programs on the internet and you have yourself a sound effects making machine!

When it comes down to total cost, unless you find all the free ones you need, you would end up paying a lot of money to buy them over the cost of just getting a good microphone.

Yup making your own is the best. I hope to eventually get my office setup so I can do my own sound effects. Right now I'm making cables and junk just to be able to record vynl and tapes into mp3's. when I finish that, the midi - usb cable should be in, and I'll start hooking electric piano into the system... and then I 'll work on hooking up a good mic.. and wala studio. :D

If you find that making sounds yourself is out of the quiestion, I find www.findsounds.com (http://www.findsounds.com) to be a valuable site for free sounds.

thanks for the responses! like some of you suggested, i started messing around recording my own sounds (rreeeaally ghetto style, i plugged headphones into the mic jack, banged on a table, and then edited it using the windows "sound manager" or whatever the hell the default program is when you right click on a .wav file and click "record") and i'm having a hell of a lot more fun then i thought i'd be :P i'm about to run out to radioshack and get a mic, and a headphone-jack cord so i can plug my SNES into the mic jack and record some sound fx. you guys know of any good freeware sound editing software?

Audacity? It's a nice one. Just enough modes for any recordings... Microphone, Line in, Stereomixer... And adding sound effects like amplifying, fade in, fade out... Many.

I usually just google around for the sound I need, then edit it a bit with audacity.
