OK...this may be the wrong forum but I dunno if it'll fit in any.
You should have a random help forum...anyway...
Just how do you piece together a website? I mean, the cheapest program possible. Like, urm, not a flash website buta html one without using code...doesn anybody know?
My friend told me to use dream weaver but £££ isn't looking too good and my computer is about as reliable at downloading as Soul is at being right.
So any help or advise or anything is again greated with open arms and a small wrapped gift.
Ahhh, I love using peoples intelegence for my own advantage.
Thanks all.

Well you are kinda in the wrong place for help if you dont want to touch code.
Dreamweaver offers a great interface for just plugging in all your files to make a quickie.
You can download a free 30 day trial from Macromedia.

Get microsoft frontpage. Kirupa made his entire site with that (well, not including the flash stuff). It is very easy to learn and is just as powerful as dreamweaver IMO. Plus, a bit cheaper.

Director for CDRom production. it can be used for the web but in my mind its not a good idea. besides you will have to learn "lingo" (directors "actionscript")

Its a Microsoft product.
You probably can buy it after you sign over the rights to your first born child and leave a stool sample.

If you want something totally free - download netscape, it comes bundled with a page builder. It was better in the previous versions of netscape but it still has a potential...
Oh and there are lots of WYSIWYG free html editor over internet... Check download.com or sites such as...

I know this site was made with it and the boss man has written a book on it but... Frontpage... <b>*Shudders*</b>
Download the 30 day trial of Dreamweaver MX. Without question. :)
Else open up Notepad, and code it from scratch. It's easy enough to do something simple, just a couple of strategically placed tags. :)

if you want a great program that doesnt cost lots of $$$, then choose Notepad. ;)

My first few sites were all Notepad hard coded HTML and JavaScript. :) There was also clip art and animated gifs involved, but this was 1998. :P
I didn't get hold of a WYSIWYG editor till Dreamweaver 4. :)

Wow, I've only started to learn about this thing we call computers about a year ago and now I'm great at it. Also with this website thing too, I've just started to get into this stuff + flash less than 3 months ago. But it does get much easier with WYSIWYG editors.

I was taught to build webpages from scratch, as it were, so you did all the coding yourself, not letting the editors do the hard work. :)
And I have to say, it's probably the best approach, because now I can go into something like Dreamweaver, create something visually, then go into the code and take it to pieces. :P

But FP blows chode man. Dreamweaver or I prefer HomeSite but that's because I had anything near WYSIWYG plus HS5 is awesome. They have this thing called a CodeSweeper in there and it will sort all the HTML and nest it in the right places and everything. I know DW does a bit of that but not nearly as indepth functionality as HS5.

Well this all seams like a lot of work...and it IS summer...
ahhh jeeze...I'll just do it on the rainy days...wait, I live in England...I think I'll be doing my site quite a bit.
I was going to download Dreamweaver MX trail for 30days but then it said on the requirements I need 95MB of RAM and I think my old **** machine (it's made of wood don't ya know) only has it in the 60s so I need to buy some RAM.
Oh and one more thing....what the hell is RAM? - I mean actually.
Is it phsyical (sp?) or the other kind...man I'm lame at writing.
I blame my media course.

RAM is Random Access Memory.
It is used to swap files that are being accessed by the CPU. They are the little sticks of circuitry you sometimes see.
Kitiara
July 15th, 2003, 05:35 PM
So yes, RAM is a physical thing. :)
But of course there's loads of different kinds... DIMMS at various MHz, RDRAM, SIMMs for older machines... :beam:

72 pin EDO RAM SIMMS, they were the standard RAM for older computers, like Pentium 1's... DIMMS etc have replaced them now, of course...

July 15th, 2003, 05:48 PM
Ohhhhhhhhhh...............................
right, lets just stick with DDR for now
bedhead_dl
July 15th, 2003, 06:09 PM
DDwhat?
...seriously
Kitiara
July 15th, 2003, 06:13 PM
OK, all the letters are basically just different kinds of RAM. The kind you need depends on your computer. Older machines have different connections to newer machines, as memory improved over the years.
The old Pentium 1's used what are called SIMMS as their RAM, they had a 72 pin connection, so that's what the machines had to install them
As memory was improved upon, new kinds came out, DIMMS etc, that required a different connection, and as this memory was better than the old ones, machines were built to cope with the new connection.
So the type of computer you have will detemine what kind of memory you have to buy. :)

Right...
*cogs wirr*
That's starting to make sense.
So how will I know what my computer takes? I think it's a pentium something...haha that helps...urm, it doens't have a number but I got this computer when Windows ME came out sinse it has it on it...so what will it be?
Thanks for all this technical info by the way...you'll make a genius outa me yet.

OK, the best thing to do is find out what the motherboard and processor are. :) That's a good start. :)

I'm just wondering, why do you people hate frontpage so much?
I've used the dreamweaver demo, and I couldn't figure out how to make tables like you can in Frontpage. And the only way I know how to make sites is with lots of tables.
What makes dreamweaver so much better than frontpage?
Soul

I'm wondering the same thing :)

frontpage, in my experience, adds a lot more code than necessary... DW does as well, but not nearly as many as FP...
also nice to be able to edit images without having to open FW...
that kinda stuff...

Right...
To find out your processor you should be able to right click on the My Computer icon on the desktop, which will bring up all your system properties. That will tell you the processor you're running.
To find out how much memory you've got you can look in the BIOS... When your machine first boots up, you'll see some text along the lines of "Press Del to enter BIOS" or something... Do that and you'll be taken to that... Whatever you do, don't change anything in here unless you know what you're doing. :) But there should be a memory setting in there that you can use to see what you've got.
As for what RAM you need... The best way is going to be to open up the PC and see what's already in there. Most RAM has they type printed on it, so if you check what you've got now, you should know what to buy in future. :)

What about that new program coming out...Flash - sitebuilder 2.1 erm maybe it is out:-\ anyways from that you can set up your own flash intros and templates just by picking which ones you want and you can change theme music, edit text, choose color, etc.. umm there's a demo at http://www.webdesignhq.com/sitebuilder21/ Not sure if anything has been posted about this yet but anyways

Ch4rlotte, I think programs like that are good in the beginning when you just started learning, but eventually you'll want to break away from templates and predefined boundries to be more creative.

i agree with Daveman on this one...kind of. i really like css and i used it all the time for a while in my webpages...then i discovered like half of the properties i had defined weren't supported by netscape, or looked funky in macs, or something like that. maybe someday ALL css properties will be supported by ALL browsers...
there seems to be some disagreement about whether you should use dreamweaver or frontpage...i've used both and have came to the conclusion that any beginner should really start learning HTML from scratch. it's not hard at all once you get the hang of it...heck, even a 12 year old can do it! besides, both of those programs are way over priced, over code things, and don't save me any time really.
my advice: save your money and learn HTML...if you stick with this webpage thing you'll end up having to learn HTML anyway.

i know for a fact that the "overflow-y: hidden;" parameter doesn't work on macs...it's one of my favorite things! it took me forever to figure out how to hide just one scroll bar ( and not both...like you get when you use a simple "scroll=no")
