I made this 3d thing a today, I wanted something mechanical for my portfolio. I'm gunna have it printed with a few of my other models and include it with my college apps. Its animated and everything (the animation isnt too exciting though). Just thought I'd share :) took about an hour. Just a quick project.
Software: Maya
Rendered with Mental Ray

Hahah it's some subsection of a doomsday device!
What was the rendertime on that sucker? Is there fg on it, cause it looks like it's got a subtle bounce on it which i can never get :( (haha building shaders has got to be my weaker point)

The render time was a minute or two tops with final gather. not too bad. :)
edit: haha two replies since I started typing. thanks guys.
DDD: I think it would work... i misplaced the front two holes tho, they're supposed to be more centered on the cylinder, but i figured they wouldnt notice :P I'll compress the video and put it up.
Alex: I use maya for all my 3d stuff.

Ok I posted up the animation. Its in the top post now. I think i might have compressed it too much, the colors and stuff look kinda washed out... I hate compressing videos lol, its always too big or looks bad. *sigh*
It's also in a zip file because my stupid web host (ipowerweb) updated their control panel... I can no longer upload movie files, for my own protection. I think i'm ready to switch, i hate them now.
I only rendered one cycle, then looped it to save time. I probably should have had the camera move a little. oh well, it works :P
Edit: alex, you should try it! You can download a free version off their website. It doesnt expire or anything, the only downside is they watermark any of your renders. But hey, its free, and great to test out.
