How to create your own sounds

Excuse my ignorance; does anybody know what would be the best program to create your own sounds? Any suggestion, is GarageBand an option?

I’m planning to use sounds in my flash site.

Hi,

Sound design/creation is quite a complex subject, especially when creating sounds from nothing. However, modifying exisitng sounds isn't difficult with the right software and there are plenty of .wav files out there to play with.

The two primary programs, Sony Soundforge and Steinberg Wavelab, are quite expensive. I'm sure there are other decent ones that cost much less, do a search and some research.
