I'm going to by a new laptop relatively soon, and since I've heard alot of bad stuff about Vista, so I'm considering trying a Linux distribution.

I'm not very skilled with computers, though I'd say I'm above the average computer user.

I've never tried using anything else than Windows before, but I'm pretty sure I can adjust to using a new system.

Now what I'd like is for you guys to give me some advice. Advantages and disadvantages of using Linux? What distribution to choose? Hard- and software combability? Your personal experience? Etc.. Etc..

Thanks in advance

OFF TOPIC: The reason I didn't post this in the computers forum, is because I don't want extremely advanced responses.

Just use ubuntu... it's easy to do most things. My friend only uses linux and he does pretty well.

I mean u just have to get use to the whole system and console. After a month of using it you will probably be use to it.

Ubnutu is sweet, I prefer it over Debian these days for domestic rigs, but still use Debian for servers.

Ubuntu is relatively easy to install, configure, maintain, install software and upgrade, it kinna checks all the boxes for an entry level linux distro.

Ubuntu has issues w/ on board network cards. I'm not able to install it on my desktop OR my laptop for the exact same reason on two different boards  saddens me.

Ubuntu is my first Linux too, I like it! Getting new apps is super easy and they're all free. It's as easy as using getapp. What's nice is that the terminal commands are the same as OS X. The app selection definitely isn't as good as Windows, but that's changing. The biggest problem I ran into was with the drivers.

Drivers have always been a problem with linux, always better to have a search based on your current system to see if anything is not supported, with a little digging you'll find that almost most major/mainstream hardware is supported in some aspect.

NIC's have always been a problem, esp. onboard, normally you have to load a kernal module or recompile the kernal with support for the NIC in it to get it to work effectively.
