I'm just fed up hearing how amazing some bands are for them to be pretty tame. Not suck, I mean I don't listen to the acts listed below and think they're awful. I mean I can see how they could attract an auidence, I just think the title LEGEND is way way over the top in terms of these acts
Pink Floyd - 10 minute guitar solos, I mean come on
Led Zeppelin - actually I do think they suck
Elton John - ruined anything good he did with all the crap he produced in the 80's
How about you, anyone you want to add?

Iron Maiden
AND!!! LED ZEPPELIN! They sucked then, they suck now!

Elvis - I don't like his music and could never get my head around what the attraction/appeal was (and still is).

yeah you see people worshipping Led Zeppelin all the time, so I got some music from them, and I was shocked! Stairway to heaven is good, but that's it...
The Ramones? like 800songs that sounds the same. Blitzkrieg bop is a classic, but why did he only write one verse and sang it 5 times? Boooooring

Pretty much anything punk pisses me off. Real classic punk, I'm referring to. Yeah, being able to sing really poorly and hammer the same power chord for almost three minutes is super awesome, look how non-conformist you are. :puke:

^ I agree about punk, but I like pretty much all of the other bands listed. I don't really listen to any of them regularly (except Elton John - he is a legend, and if you disagree with me I will fight you!) but I do recognize their talent and originality. These are bands that stand out - you may not be a fan of how they sound, but they were definitely pioneers in their own way.
@Counterproductive: How can you say that?? You have broken my heart, sir.
But anyway, I'll actually contribute instead of being a big naysayer...
I really like the Rolling Stones, I've seen them live and it was incredible. But that song "I can't get no satisfaction" drives me insane. It's so bad... Puts me in a bad mood every time I hear it.
Not too fond of the band America either... "Sister golden hair" is pretty cool, but "Horse with no name" is an abomination.

I #&@*ing hate King Diamond. Coheed and Cambria too, I can't stand that guy's voice. Nor can I stand Geddy Lee. Basically, anything with a dude who sings so high that dogs writhe in pain, I'm not down. Come on. Mars Volta (and Deftones occasionally) proves that a guy can sing high without sounding like a sissy.
Bob Dylan's a mumbling putz, too. The Beatles.. :smh: sure, they were ground breaking, blah blah. Enough already.

I really don't like Iron Maiden, I love all other 80s hair metal bands tho, just not Iron Maiden, its something about the singer.

Sorry, I don't mean to say hes bad or anything, just that everybody seems to like him and I can't stand any of his songs.
For the record I like punk, GnR, Iron Maiden, and I wouldn't say I'm a fan of Led Zepplin but they have a few tunes I like. I remain unoffended.

I think a lot of the bands listed here as over-rated...well you have to look at it from a contextual standpoint. when they came out they were this or that because of the situation.
I am a rock music fan, and I can appreciate where the music I listen to now and the new music that's coming out got all of their sound/spirit from. So it's like respecting your elders, I'm sure that some bands get more recognition or what have you because they're old, but that's just respect.
if this is a thread to bash bands just for the sake of it then that's a different story ;)
bands I think are over-rated NOW (based on the idea that I am starting out in music and am not aware of the history or politics around the specific times these bands recorded their music):
iron maiden - can't stand the voice
van halen - (I actually really respect this band, but the music is so generic sounding now)
nirvana - I never understood why kids worshipped kurt cobain. but then again I do...musically they are good, but not great....anyways.
alice in chains - if you knew the history of this band you'd understand why they are on my list. I love their music, but as a band, as a group of people they are over-rated, sonically they are great, but how they created and why they created their music is over-rated to me.

Slayer is underrated.
My chemical romance is one of the crappiest bands ever.
Bullet for my Valentine is also one of the crappiest bands ever.
In fact almost all emo-hardcore music is whack.

Oh god yes, the Doors...I hate the doors. I just don't see it. Years ago when "light my fire" was re-released here in the Uk all my friends bought their old albums and became huge Doors fans. I always thought they sucked.
Hippy music x 10 x an organ x meandering stoned out of his head lead singer = the doors.
As for emo-hardcore, they're all trying to be a mix of Nirvana and Linkin Park with some pop thrown in. That description right there is the reason it doesn't work.

My chemical romance is one of the crappiest bands ever.Apparently their album "Black Parade" is almost identical to Pink Floyds the wall in terms of concept album content. With the same plot line, similar sounding songs as For the Flick and Mother and if you watch the music video for teenagers, it bears a striking resembelence to the scene in The Wall movie in which Run Like Hell is featured. Interesting.
^id have to agree on you on certain level there. i like their music heaps, but people tend to get a little bit carried away and try and make it more than it really is or should be. I think the band knows this too and try and play themselves down a bit.

Would agree to an extent. Was told OK Computer was the greatest album of all time...it ain't. Thought it sucked and pretty much gave up on them there and then.
But people keep telling me how good they were so I decided to try their other album I'd heard so much about (The Bends) and was suprised to find it an excellent album.
So in some respects I would say, yes Radiohead are over-rated. On the other hand though I would advise you to go listen to "The Bends".

I had a co-worker who told me to read No One Gets Out Of Here Alive, the bio of Jim Morrison. She said that it'll make me a fan. No dice. All I learned about Jim Morrison is that he was an abusive alcoholic who had major unresolved issues around his relationship with his dad.

Um, that's not the Beatles, it's the Monkeys. ;)
I think you guys think a lot of the old school bands are over rated because they are so! desperately! overplayed!
That's the problem I think with a lot of bands. For example, I think Bob Marley was a genius for producing so many catchy tunes that rallied a lot of people together, even though he only knew about 3 chords . That said, if you listen to the radio out here you'd think he only wrote about three songs: 3 Little Birds, No Woman No Cry, and Is This Love That (all from Legened - one of the most overplayed albums in history). Makes me freaking crazy and I actually turn the radio off when I hear one of those songs. :hair:
ajcates
December 4th, 2007, 07:00 PM
Nickelback isn't overrated, everyone knows they suck, therefore there rated just fine. But then again, if the rating scale is 1-10 thing, Nickelback would have to be over rated because the lowest score is 1, and the deserve less then that.
graylensman
December 5th, 2007, 09:32 AM
^ Good point, lunatic. The Beatles aren't overrated-their impact on pop and rock cannot be overestimated. They are, however, horribly overplayed and any countercultural cache has been worn down by time and baby boomers.
And, ajcates, if everybody knows Nickelback sucks, they wouldn't sell records or be on the radio.

I disagree with you about Elton John. I like his voice and the piano. Not really the lyrics though. But then I don't pay attention to the lyrics that much.
