Copying Audio from a DVD

Hey everyone,
I was wondering if anybody here knows how I can copy the Audio only from a DVD so I can burn it onto a CD. I have a ton of live music DVDs that would be great to listen to while traveling around :) I am hoping there is a better solution besides using a Mic and simply recording the sound analog(ally?)!

If you've got a MiniDisc player that would work.. and you wouldn't get any background noise or anything compared to using a mic.. I'm sure there is a way to rip audio straight off a DVD, but I havent researched it.... (it's norty norty y'see ;))

I don't have a mini-disc player? There has to be some program that takes the audio signals the computer sends and records them digitally. Don't waveform analyzers (I think that's what they are called) analyze the sound internally? I tried a few CD-DA extracters, but I think I am getting the wrong programs.

Only if Phil were here - I recommended a program to him a long time ago that did similar to what I was asking :)

The program seems to be just what I am looking, now all I have to do is rip the video, and I'll be all set ;)

anyway, find these programs (most can be found at www.doom9.org):

DVD Decrypter HeadAC3he DVD2AVI

First, take your DVD and rip it using DVD Decrypter. The program's pretty self-explanatory: just direct the program to your DVD drive and hit the big button, you won't miss it.

Now, use the program DVD2AVI and direct it (open, or F3) to the folder where DVD was ripped. It will be looking for an IFO. Now since we only want the audio, we won't look at the Video settings. Go into the Audio Menu -> Dolby Digital and choose Demux All Tracks (if it's not already chosen). Hit F4 and save to some other directory. Now the program is doing its thing.

From this program, you will get a few audio files, extensioned .ac3. Now guess which program we're gonna use now...HeadAC3he. Open the audio file (btw, you can delete any other file that isn't a .ac3) in the program and choose your Destination Format hopefully if you downloaded from the right location, you'll have MP3 available. Now, hit Options>> and choose Stereo under Downmix type. Now click on the 2ch button. Mind you, this is totally optional, if you want to keep it at its default (surround 2 and 6 channel, depending on the audio) you can do so. Now, if you chose MP3 as your format, click the Options button again. Here you'll see the encoding options. Pull down Presets and choose CD. It will automatically choose CBR (constant bit rate) for you. Change the Ave: value to 320 for quality's sake, if you want. Now hit Start.

Play them on your computer and hit the 'Print Screen' button.

naw, that'll usually give you just a black screen. it's supposedly to protect the movie from any copyright infringement. :sigh:

Kirupa I would reccommend using smart ripper and dvd2avi. Use smart ripper to rib the VOB files of the audio you want to listen to. Sve it to your HDD, and look at the .txt file that smart ripper creates. It should look like this...

The only info in this file you need is the stream info, which I highlighted. :) Look to see which stream you want to rip, and open DVD2AVI. Open the VOB file in DVD2AVI and pull the audio menu down and pick dolby digital > demux (You could choose demux all tracks but there is no reason to, only demux the streams you want) Choose what stream you want to demux from the audio menu (stream one of above would demux the english audio) Hit F4 to save project, name it whatever you like. This will leave you with a .ac3 audio file, and a .d2v file, you can delete the .d2v file, we are only interested in this file if you are doing something with the video. Then its very easy to use a program called besweet to transcode the file to CD audio quality sound. You can D/L Besweet and the GUI from http://www.doom9.org like other have mentioned. :) (This is where Smartripper and DVD2AVI come from as well.) I have had excellent results with BeSweet, plus it will downmix directly to a .wav file. This is the way to go if you are buring CDs. MP3 compression is a lossy compression, even at good bitrates. While most of the time you can't hear the difference, downmixing directly to a .wav does not lose any audio in the process. =) If you have any questions, let me know I use all these programs quite a bit.

Side point... I don't think you can record directly to a MD recorder. I have one, and have tried this in the past. The digital stream comming from the DVD player is usually Dolby Digital PCM, which the MD deck can not understand, so it won't record it. Maybe newer decks could, mine are three years old. =)

if your using power dvd or windvd it has a screenshot capture option which lets you take screenshots of the movie while its playing :beam:

as for dvdripping i suggest you check out this site kirupa
http://www.dvdrhelp.com its tells you every way you can rip and convert your movies very good with tons of tutorials ;)

The screen shot option in software player usually has problems if the DVD is encoded with Macrovision. You will bet a black screen, or green blocks in the pic. You can use DVD2AVI to capture screenshots pretty well. =)
