Step 3:
Now make a darker grey your foreground color (#262626) and keep your selection.

Now go to Edit - Stroke -
Width: 5 pixels
Location: Inside
Opacity: 100%
Mode: Normal.

Still keep your selection.did you keep your selection?

I even did CRTL+ clicking layer again :(

well.. hang on.. there should be a point where you have pixels selected...

you type your letter...
select the letter and make it grey
then you're keeping selection through step 3

.. I dont understand how you can lose your selection by step 4? it's impossible. you're definitely doing something wrong.

I dont understand at all what i can be doing wrong, and its 1 in the morning too!

Ideally, i would like to apply the effect to an image i have...do you think it's possible?!

asphaltcowboy
July 9th, 2003, 08:20 PM
hang on... so is there actually a problem you're having with it?

as for working with an image... why dont you test it? :-\

Alucard_X
July 9th, 2003, 08:21 PM
My problem is when i do step three, it says no pixels were selected even though the text IS selected.

I'm sorry if i'm annoying you btw, what can i do, i'm trying really hard

asphaltcowboy
July 9th, 2003, 08:24 PM
the text is selected? as in.. word-selected (as if you dragged your mouse over it).. as in... not like in the second picture (where the pixels of the text are selected? how are you selecting the text...

if you just follow the tute word-for-word it's easy.. just dont do anything that it doesnt mention

are you on the wrong layer?

Try zooming in on your selection

(I am assuming that you are a Windows user)

1. Put a selection around your text/object.
2. Go up to View>Zoom in (Ctrl ++)
3. Then try to apply the effect.

P.S. If that doesn't work, put a selection around the object, press Ctrl+J to release it to it's own layer, then apply the effect...

I hope this helps...:thumb:

click on the text layer, particullarly the thumbnail, and select: select layer transparency

then moving dashed lines will surround the text.

Thanks for the help everyone, i will try again now :)

Asphalt, i appreciate your help, but i am not stupid. I said i didn't have too much experience with photoshop, and that is why i asked for help.

I shouldn't need to be afraid to ask for help in case i am ridiculed should i?

Anyway i will try again

My point is, it tells you exactly what to do (and press), word for word. In fact. I'm going to go and do this tutorial right now. Back in a few minutes.

EDIT: All despite how much I hate chrome text effects :P

There. did it. what was so difficult? Follow the instructions to the letter.. and it works.

Alucard_X
July 10th, 2003, 07:09 AM
Nope.

No matter what i do it will not let me do SELECT--->MODIFY---->CONTRACT (by 15 pixels)

I have uploaded my work file to prove it :(

http://www.angelfire.com/yt3/alucardx/chrome_title.psd

Please tell me there is something wrong in the tutorial...and not with my head....

rofl, I've just worked it out. Does it or does it not say, at the start
First of all you'll have to start off by making a new image. I made a new file, 350 x 350 pixels (we'll minimize the image at the end...), transparent backround, RGB mode.did you do that? no.
With this tutorial it's very important to make the letters really big, and then minimize the text when you are finished to get the full effect!did you do that? no.

the reason no pixels were selected is because your font is so small/thin.. that contracting a selection by 15 pixels really means there are no pixels to select!! contracting your selection on that font, at that size means the selection would come out the other side of the letters as it were.

so it really is a case of following the instructions to the letter :trout:

Ok i have 3 layers, just like it says.

Layer 1 has the text,
Layer 2 has the darker foreground colour with stroke changes
Layer 3 is mean to have the white shadow.

We are supposed to be applying the changes to layer 3, but there is nothing in layer 3 to apply any effect to.

If i try doing it to layer 1 or 2 it wont let me either

Alucard_X

ahh i see what you mean.

But i don't want just the letter "a"

I need a whole line.

Do you sugest doing it one by one? Or just keeping it at what it is but making the text very big?

What size is "big" cos i am using point 60 :-\

And my font is no good?

:stunned:

asphaltcowboy
July 10th, 2003, 07:34 AM
I used font size 225 when I did mine. you have to consider the fact that you'll be resizing considerably afterwards (to around 60%). If you want a long line, then you'll have to make it really huge. Otherwise you'll have to do it one by one :)

The font is ok.. it just has to be a lot bigger

OK dude thanks for the help.

I will start this long task of doing it one by one. If i have any problems, i'll ask.

Thanks again!

:P

So it was my head after all....

half the time u dont even need to make a new layer. usually when it tells me to create a new layer or dupe it i just skip that dupe or new bit. it turns out fine for me!

Just ask me and i can show you some of the photoshop 7 works i have done!

Alucard_X
