does anyone have a good technique for selecting fire from an image? I saw one a long time ago that I think involved using selections from different channels, but when I clicked on the link for what I think was the same tutorial, it was no longer there.

go into channels, crtl+click the channel with most definition (red for fire) and now you have a selection. feather your selection a few pixels and go to composite image (out of channels) and select inverse and delete it or mask it. you should now have your flame isolated with a transparent bg and edges.

when placing on new image, adjust blending mode and opacity to suit the needs and play with layer masking with a soft brush to give a more natural look.

the below image is a combination of the steps above.
