Apache & socket question

I'm trying to learn some really basic beginners stuff and I can't really find the answer anywhere. In this tutorial:

they talk about how to use these php sockets to make a chat. the tutorial focuses on running apache to get these things to work...ok it works so now I want to put it on my website. I'm dumb...I upload the files, it doesn't work. What do I need to do?

I've been doing that turorial too and when it didnt work for me i did a forum search and found out that i'm not the only one.

You need to enable an X amount of setting of Apache and some other things if i recall right, I stopped at that point because i didn't want to put so much effort in something like this.

are you saying that i shouldn't have to do anything but just upload the files? and it SHOULD work? I don't have to go into my web sites control panel and configure something or some how drop a file somewhere or something?
