This is from a brush set i found at Adobe Studio Exchange. You really shuoldn't modify it and us it as your logo. I know htey are difficult to come up with when it is for your self but try.

I was wondering if anyone would drop the bomb on number five.

I can understand how tempting it can can be to co-opt a brush shape, font shape, etc. when doing a logo. They're **** hard to make well. Just look at how much crap there is out there.

Design ethics and copyright issues aside, here are a few things that work for me when I'm working on a logo project. (I do quite a bit of identity and branding work.)

Start out with a bunch of free association. Just take down words and imagery that pop into your head when you think of the company name or industry area. Blastboy is a good one to work with. What comes to mind when you think of "blast"? Cherry bombs, dynamite. a keg of TNT... You get the idea.

A cute idea came to mind just now...not really a winner, but funny.
A little international symbol-type "boy" with an exploding head.
"blastboy"

Don't use that...really. :smirk:

Once you have some basic imagery to work with, *then* you can star doodling around with style. The negative illustration style used for the gasmask guy is a great style to work with for identity applications. It prints and scales well and lends itself to black and white use as well as color.

I highly recommend a little, inexpensive book called "the Idea Index". It's a pocket sized book that gives you all sorts of visual style examples and typographic treatments that'll inspire your creativity. Indispensable for someone getting their feet wet in identity design. You can find it on Amazon.

Logo is an abbreviation of the word logogram which is defined as "a symbol representing a phrase, word, or idea". Simply put, it should abbreviate the thing it represents. While the gasmask illustration looks cool, it doesn't say "blastboy". (Maybe a similarly-styled head with some neato, comic book style welding goggles?)

I hope my rambling plants a seed for some inspiration. If you want some more techniques for generating some ideas or a few pointers in the way of refining your concepts for a logo, feel free to email.

Word to your mother.

padawan, I don't think you should post this in someone elses thread when its meant to be about his work. Just a suggestion :) Your logo is not bad, the things that make it look strange are the stretched T and the missing T at the top.

hmm...I guess I was going more for some ways for you to come up with some ideas than making specific recommendations.

It seems like you're beginning to get on the right track, though. I'll be the first to tell you that it's almost never a quick, easy process to come up with winning imagery for a logo. You just have to keep plugging away at it. It'll happen. I promise. It *will* take some time, though.

Working with the "birthday" angle is a pretty tough one. Don't concentrate specifically on a directly associated image if it's stumping you. (i.e. a picture of a birthday cake or candle.) Play around with some compositions of typography. A great example of this method is Macromedia's logo. Does it tell you instantly what the company is about? Not really. Is it memorable and easily recognizable? Definitely. You'll find the letter "M" is pretty nice to work with in this way.

I took a few of my initial ideas and ran with them. These wouldn't be anything I'd necessarily present to a client without some refining and coming up with about 20 more ideas. (I try to make a lot and choose my favorite 3 to present.)

The three concepts in the attached file will give you a better idea of what I'm talking about with image abstraction and typographic composition.

btw - these are for illustrative purposes only. If you use them, I have to charge you lots of money. ;)

If you dropped that photo into Illustrator, Freehand or other vector drawing program and traced the outline you'd have the beginnings of a very sharp logo. You might mot want to include all of the little feather detail and such. But, that'd be safe in the way of copyright infringement and wouldn't look bad at all.

Take a shot. It all takes practice.

VisualAMP, what does that mean? are u talking amp as in amplified, or is this an acronymn for something else?

And why a TV? Do you do broadcasting? Expand a little on what you want to achieve and it will be far easier.

blast (millad) didnt you already have a set of logos that you made? You asked for opinions and got a bunch. Personally there was one I really liked. The first step to being an artist and surviving in this business is knowing when to put the brush down. Go with what you already had those were nice. Sorry if someone said this already I did not read all the posts

people put to much thought into logos. i mean come on one of the most famous logo's is a nike swoosh. do you really think they sat around for weeks and weeks designing that!

DDD
July 10th, 2003, 03:06 PM
nah I dont think it is too much thought. But you only get one chance to make a first impression. ANd if they are lke wut the hell is that? Then you have lost. Branding is very very important and requires thought and research.

sintax321
July 10th, 2003, 03:11 PM
I doubt they sat for weeks designing that one but i'm sure they thought for weeks on a couple before deciding on that one.

stimulus
July 10th, 2003, 03:26 PM
:)

Actually, that logo was far from dumb luck. It was *at least* as calculated as anything we've come up with here.

The swoosh logo is a design created by Carolyn Davidson, a graphic artist in Portland in 1971. It represents the wing of the Greek Goddess of victory-NIKE. It's not just a weird shape someone thought would look neat, it had a great deal of thought put into its symbolism, marketability and impression.

Logos portray business images. The logo's distinct image is a reminder of a product or service.

You remember great logos because they've made a lasting impression. The impact of-or lack thereof-a logo can mean the difference between the success of a business or that of its competitor.

Smaller businesses especially must meet the challenge of creating a long lasting first impression. When establishing the corporate identity for a startup or small business, goals are formulated, business plans are instituted and a specific image is created. But the logo identity is far too often put on the back burner and thoughtlessly designed. The evolution of the logo design and its finalization into a well crafted image will convey to the public that this company cares about they image they project.

In short, if your business has shoddy identity it conveys that feeling to potential clients and customers. Businesses care about these things because it's financially prudent to do so.

stimulus at least u seem to have an understanding of branding. No offence but some of u guys have awesome computer skills but so need to get away from the computer a bit and grasp a better understanding of the principles and concepts of design.

Designs that you take for granted (such as the Nike swoosh) and that are subtly great, are born from a massive creative process. Admittedly some designs still manage to turn out a little suspect despite this process, but the point is that there is far more to good deisign than meets the eye. :eye:

Cheers.

I wasn't trying to come off as condescending or anything. This just happens to be my bag. Hell, I started coming to these forums because there a s**tload of people who really know the ins and outs of Flash. I don't. I'm learning--with help from everyone else here--but I'm still pretty green.

I just don't want to burn any bridges. :smirk:

Great design is a long and hellish endeavor that's intended to look effortless. The most difficult design is often the simplest.
