I am all set with the patches and nicotine gums and crap.
I am also sick of having a $130/mo habbit. Id much rather spend that on beer or video games.

Good luck! My sister once told my grandfather to stop smoking. He did!
If a loved one explains how bad smoking really is and the consequences that affect you, it'll help you quit.
Also, it's good that you're quiting early (well 12 - 23 isn't that early), but it's better than quiting when you're like 40.
Keep it up.
Fight those cigarretes! :rambo: :ninja: HIYA!

how did sir walter raleigh sell cigerettes to people anyway? I can imagine the description going somthing like this:
"hi there!, I've got this GREAT idea, lemme show ya."
"first, get some paper. right? good!"
"now get some leaves, crush them up and roll them up in the paper. Make it like a pencil or somthing."
"ok, now put the paper/leaf roll in you mouth. not all of it, just the tip, leave a bit hanging."
"NOW SET FIRE TO IT AND BREATH IN THE SMOKE!"

Well hell... lets just make it the great Kirupa Smokeout then... I have been meaning to quit anyway... Any more smokers out there? Nows the time to quit. I will go home tonight and destroy the rest of the carton I have. Fester has a good point... Do I really like setting fire to $130 a month? No... Not really... Think of the money, and lung tissue that can be saved. If I can give up caffene, nicotine shouldn't be a problem. ;)
Cheers!

Very well said - sure it will rot your brain, but at least you will be able to breath and wont die of smoke induced cancer (the most common kind)
You can do it dude... no doubt. We're all proud of you. I have yet to even try a cig... my whole family smokes eccept for my bro and myself and it's the best decision I have ever made.

yeah, you go for it man. To be fair i have tried smoking a couple of times and i can sorta see why people do it. With me it relaxed me, although i've been told that the effect doesn't happen after smoking loads and all you do it for is the nicotine addiction.
Because i've tried a few, i can safely say that smoking is not for me.

I only smoke when I drink. Something about it, just can't help it.
Other than that, I don't smoke, and I think its great that you guys are quitting. :)
here's a couple of jokes about smoking that I thought were funny:
"I quit smoking a couple months ago. Its been really tough. But you know what I hated the most when I was smoking? It was those non-smokers that always said something whenever I lit up a cigarette. One time I lit up, and this woman behind me started to cough and choke. That really pissed me off, so I turned around to her and said, 'Listen, if you don't like the smoke, just move back a couple of pews all right?!'"
"So I was driving home from a party one day when I blacked out. I woke up in the ditch with a beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other. It was then that I decided to quit smoking... those cigarettes were going to be the death of me..."

yeah, I shouldn't even be smoking when I drink. Actually I should say this, "I only smoke when I'm drunk, and I don't know any better than to not smoke."
By the time that I start smoking, I have about 10 in me, and we smoke cloves when we drink. Definately messes with your head...

well, if you think about it, doing both only shortens your lifespan faster. you're endangering your lungs and your liver.
Jubba
July 10th, 2003, 11:43 AM
Oh, I have definately thought about it, and I don't always smoke when I drink. Its only when my friends that smoke are around and they start smoking, so I take a drag or two from them. I don't drink with them that often... maybe once a month or so. Its not like I'm smoking a pack a night, or even a full cigarette.
The shortening of my life is not something that I'm terribly worried about. Everyone else in my family is immortal (or at least it seems)

One bit of advice, that bull$hit about physical addiction is just that. You may have a physical dependence on nicotine, but in all reality, I smoked a pack a day for 5 years, and the physical addiction was never what stood in my way from quitting. It's the force of habit, and situational pressures that will make you smoke another cigarette. You've had a few drinks. Someone offers you a cigarette at the bar. That's a lot tougher then not smoking at work all day, got nothing to do with how physically addicted you are.
I "quit" when I realized that I was acting like an addict- going outside for the express purpose of smoking a cigarette makes no sense to me, and is akin to doing a line in the morning before going to work.
Anyone who's smoked for any length of time will tell you that smoking a cigarette is pleasurable, especially after a meal, getting laid, a few glasses of wine, etc. I look at cigarettes like every other vice, nice once in a while, but moderation in all things (including moderation ;) ) is the key, my friend.
Once I stopped being a cigarette addict, I started feeling free to truly enjoy a cigarette once in a while when at a bar or something, just like I enjoy a few drinks here and there, etc. etc. Do I pop a beer as soon as I open my eyes in the morning? No, that'd be pretty alcoholic of me. In the same sense, I won't keep cigarettes around and smoke 'em all day, there's no reason.
That worked for me, but then again you could be the AA type who needs to draw a line in the sand on this one and never touch a cigarette again. Who knows.
I will tell you this- however you want to look at it, if you've been smoking a pack a day for 11 years, you need to quit cold turkey for a long while before you can even start thinking about smoking in moderation. That moderation thing is something you can go back to later, after you no longer feel the need to smoke. And that'll be a while.
Oh, and you don't need any "luck" to quit smoking. Like everything else, once it becomes important enough to you, you'll do it.
When you can snatch the pebble from my hand....

the thing that got me back into smoking every time I quit, was not the nicotine, but the act of something to do with my hands...
Certain situations screamed for me to have a cig in my hand...
Not being able to smoke in bars, and a $5/pack pricetag definitely got me to think of other ways to combat that urge.
Once the urge is gone, not smoking is easy...

Yup. After the chemical addiction is gone, (which it should be almost if not all the way for you guys) the need to smoke is based on situations. The hardest part for me when I tried to quit before was driving... During the fantasic Chicago rush hour traffic, I would smoke. Well when I bought a new car I decided that I would not smoke in it. I didn't want the smell, stains, and burns on my seats. Once I got over needing to smoke in the car I smoked a lot less. Now once I get over the "need" to smoke at work, my victory will be complete. It not easy, the mind will play tricks on you, making it harder than it should be.
Oh and Rev, the $5 a pack thing help me decide that I no longer wanted to smoke as well. Thats harsh... Can you envision yourself lighting a 5 dollar bill on fire and throwing it out the window every day? I sure couldn't. ;)
Cheers!

So True! I quit smoking, cold turkey, on thanksgiving of 99 (pun intended). It can actually be said that i havn't smoked a cigarette since last millenium..... :)
It was pretty easy to break my habit, because i really really wanted to quit, and i couldn't stand the thought of not being in control of my own body. Its really quite easy to achieve, actually. The trick lies in not putting cigarettes in your mouth and lighting them. :)
