So, there is this 17 year old girl who made this site. You can read the article below, but im gonna sum it up for you all. The interesting thing about this site is that she has been getting offers from Myspace.com, and other major companies to have her own show. She also ranks higher than Oprah on site traffic managing around a few 100,000 visitors a day. Do you think her site is worth it? This ISNT a critique. She is the artist. I just thought this site deserved attention.

Best to Ashley for her success but it hardly qualifies as a koolest site. Maybe it qualifies as koolest site entrepeneur.

It just looks like a customized myspace page..maybe thats what she is trying to get across, which thats what she designs...

I have no clue what that site is for. the colours are nice, the layout is messed up a bit, although I could navigate it farily easily (the front page at least). But I clicked on some of the links and I don't really understand any of it...is it a myspace layout? is it a myspace copycat? is it supposed to be promoting something?

and what's with the ads? the ads make me feel like it's a myspace clone...

...for a 17 year old, she knows colour fairly well, but a designer...not so sure she is that yet, it takes more than adding nice colours and being able to slice images to be a designer. I was confused and disoriented, and I'm a 'designer' too...user interface design, usability, what about straight forward site flow?

where are those elements? kudos for the fact that she's young and seems to display some colour theory skills, but other than that, blah.

also keep in mind the audience she is targeting. This site is supposed to be appealing to teenagers (more specifically girls).

There was a video on CNN about this some time ago, it talks about how she quit school to work on this.

Edit: Here is the video. (http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/tech/2007/09/21/agar.myspace.million.WXYZ?iref=videosearch)

great design, especially for who it is targeted to
it might not be the best design in the world but it works for its audience
user friendly -- not really but again young kids like to explore sites so not having a straight out navigation system is perfect for their user behavior

know your audience I say
hmmm...........

Well this is the first post I seen on this so I had to say something....

The other day this was disturbing because I was at an art gallery when the topic came up about this chick who made this site thats making all this money "helping people design there myspace layouts for friends who didn't know how to design". WOW?! she's so helpful, so I take a long hard look at this pink mess that got splattered at whateverTheFuxK.com (BEWARE the popups and spyware)

Then from the general census everyone is focusing on the media hype and the money this site is generating and the.... bleh bleh bleh shes so young ... belh bleh bleh ....

So far no one on the internet thinks its weird she's stealing copyrighted images and trademark logos and making an obnoxious amount of money ripping off photographers, designers, and artists with insulting "badly" tiled backgrounds. She's claiming to make $40-70k a month being praised by the media for what is ethically wrong and illegal(lets not even talk about myspace). Its just a matter of time till these crappy myspace layouts websites get sued or shut down and rightly should.

Im just wondering if IM completely alone on this or what. whats the fine for making money off a disney character without written permission? tv sitcoms? movies? It seems cute, but she's making more money then most of us will in 10 years.. maybe most people didn't think abotu it cuz its supposed to be illegal. if you can sleep at night and you still save the whales we're all set.. thanks asshbo!

If she can get away with it, it's all just good business. I am waiting for the day when I will have an idea as good as hers.

I wish her all the best. She is clearly a good businesswoman. I must say I'm rather jealous.

???

Perhaps BongoBob is her 17 year old boyfriend that got dumped before the cash flow came in and now he is touring the interent spreading the cheer? Bob lost his bongo perhaps?

(-: :thumb2: (joke)

I think its commendable, I mean pet rock, post-it notes, paper clips, Croc shoes, bottled water from a faucet at $2 a bottle, milliondollarhomepage, Kirupa website :kommie: , we all wish we had thought of something that someone has already.

Perhaps a new Bongo Bag (http://www.nextag.com/Accessories--zzbongoz2726663zB6z5---html) design Bob ?

I've always been inspired by these types. There's another video out there that inspired me about Shawn Nelson: http://www.shawndnelson.com .

Shawn was also only 17 when he came up with his idea. Granted both of them admit to have just "stumbled" on their success, but the hard work and determination these kids put into being successful is insane. Watch this: http://ebiz.byu.edu/video/ShawnNelson/03-22-04.wmv

Well, I do not like design of whatever life website, but truth is that website is very successful, and that she is earning much money, because her website have so many visits. It is nice to hear how some people become rich.

Wow...smh.

So, this girl starts a website to give away FREE myspace page templates. News Flash: Millions of teenage girls and boy-girls use myspace EVERY HOUR OF THE DAY. They spend much of the time they're not using to send useless messages to each other to find new cool things to feature on their profiles. They don't care how they get to these cool things, or where they get them from...just so long as they can get them somewhere.

Now, they find a website that LOOKS like a myspace page (talk about TARGET MARKETING! :P) with everything laid out on the page the same as it would be on their friends profiles. They easily find a link to where they can download a profile style (html/css code) and tons of other "goodies" to paste on their pages.

Mixed in with this content are direct, targeted ads from hundreds (if not thousands) of other websites that ALSO have content that they would like.

Now, if this website get's 40 million page-views (not unrealistic given the ammount of myspace users who flock to sites like this) with 5-10 small targeted ads per page. If even a small portion of the visitors click on these links (many of them being anywhere from $0.30 to over $1 per click-through) how is it un-realistic that she could make $70k a month?

What so many forget is the simple fact that if you're trying to push anything (for whatever means be it ad sales or product sales), it doesn't matter what you like or don't like as an individual unless that aligns in the stars with what a majority of a market likes.

This teenager stumbled on an amazingly profitable industry (marketing and advertising) doing something she liked to do and was "good at". Hell yea, good for her!

There are many ads on her website, and many popups, so if you multiply that with many many visitors she can earn much money per month.

OH MY GOD! Please tell me this is a joke!

That site is absolutely horrible! I don't give a tinker's cuss if it's targeted to teenagers, I AM A TEENAGER and I think it's bloody awful.

It upsets me to see she's earning money ... it just goes to show that teenagers are indeed all fukked up. :shifty:

Quick answer question: Name the last time you made $70k in one month doing something you'd do also do for free. Go!

I can't imagine you've got anything coming to mind. Don't hate.

I suppose you're entitled to your opinion though. :)

I don't care if it's "Kool" because it's a brilliantly 'designed' site that appeals to your sophisticated tastes, or cool because it's raking in $70k each month, that **** is KOOL. :beam:

Never really understood this one. Lots of people her age do a lot better. I think it's a limited understanding of the internet from the media or something, thinking it only consists of Myspace, so they eat this up.

Though successful people have to cater to the lowest common denominator to be successful, and that happens to be Myspace pages, I don't really feel like she is intentionally taking advantage of that. I think she happens to know one thing and she lucked out.

You can all call me a hater now.

I think the interesting thing to look at is not her design skills, or coding ability, or even her business savvy. What's interesting is trying to figure out what part of her attempt made it so successful, since "luck" just can't really explain it - something drew people to this site, and since we can't seem to put our collective finger on it, it's work looking at.

Why can't I have found something like this to exploit?!? Maybe when I can finally get some of my web projects up I can hit on some success like this...who knows.

It's too bad I hate social networking sites, and would never ever to something related to Facebook or MySpace.
