this might be of some use to you - might be able to achieve the same effect by varying the opacity of the crystals :)

i am not sure but.

Black background
>
Lighting effects (bigger - bigger crystals)
>
Fresco Filter
>
Extrude (play with these settings to get desired crystal effects).
>
Colout > Contrast > Hue
