For PHP5 on Vista I use an older version of Apache 2.0, properly configure Apache 2.0 and PHP5 and it should work. If you're trying to do it on IIS then I can't help you.

No, no , no.
There is only one way to get PHP4 or 5 workly perfectly on a Windows machine
Xampp
http://www.apachefriends.org/
I run this currently on a Vista PC and previously on an XP PC.
It also works on Server 2003 and can handle a production environment.
It currently comes with PHP5 with a switcher if you want to use PHP4
I would be more than happy to help you out with the install or any questions.

Actually, I have PHP5, MySQL 5.0, and Apache 2.0 running perfectly on my Vista rig. And by installing it yourself you learn more about how a web-server works than if you just install a dumb XAMPP or WAMP kit, and you can customize the directory layout a lot more.

I agree with installing yourself...on an Actual Webserver.
I do the install PHP5, MySQL 5.0, and Apache 2.0 on Linux webservers the way it is supposed to be.
But we are not talking about webservers. We are talking about a workstation development platform - unless he is trying to host a site from a Vista PC?
IIS is good for Exchange and internal company websites, Linux is better for PHP and Mysql that is why all the major hosting companies use it.

It's just a beneficial installing it on a development workstation, you get the learning experience, along with it being more lightweight (Easy to take out the stuff you don't want.) and it's easier to configure it to match the settings of your live deployment server.
