Quick way to make a 3d text effects

Im working on some project now and I will need to start learning 3d..

but since im on a tight sched, i would like to make a brief text with some effects, like glow out or similar.

what would be the quickest way to do it, any open source 3d programs with premade effects or something similar to that?
