Ok, so I am designing my new site, here is the design I am working on. It will be hard to explain or show some more complex parts.
Home Page: http://digitalcarnival.com/newdesigns/full_home.jpg
Mouseover on homepage: http://digitalcarnival.com/newdesigns/popup.jpg
The homepage is the only fully designed page.
The whole site is going to be AJAX and when a link is clicked the old content will slide to the left, a loading bar will slide up, when loaded the bar will slide up and the new content will also slide up (or from right, haven't decided).
Also, what does everyone think of the colours, the pallete was done by me, but it's here: http://www.colourlovers.com/palette/129213/I_feel_neutral
EDIT://

I still need to work on the bottom of the page and the sidebar

I'm gonna put in my vote for no full ajax site. srsly.

^ haha, why? More people have Javascript enabled then the flash plug-in but you very often get full flash sites. Either that or I could have it all inline but that's just pointless. Unless you can give some REALLY good reasons then i'm going my way.
But I should mention some parts won't be AJAX, mainly the labs and parts of the portfolio section for SEO reasons.

but what does everyone think about layout, colours, typography. I suck at all those three thingsFunny you should mention that cause that's exactly what I was gonna say is the matter w/ the site. Horrible header font choice and the colors make it hard to read.

^ haha, thanks, but any advice or anything like more subtle colours, and how can I improve the typography.
I am code nutter, design isn't my forte

check out the current color scheme before saying that ;)
It's a huge improvement from your current one, no doubt. The red and white seems a bit strong to me though

^ What red and white, its pink.
and you can't blame bad colours on me for my current site, it gets them direct from COLOURlovers random palletes

About the colors, I'm not gonna comment on them because you apparently have this unholy obsession with fetching color schemes at random from CL palettes, but one thing's for sure, you layout looks too much like the ReDoable theme for wordpress. ;)

^ ... This colour scheme was done by me :hurt: and from searching the redoable theme all I can see is a small thumbnail, do you have a link to a blog using it. And tbh my design has nothing new or creative layout wise, so I don't see how it could look like a particular thing

Well, I don't wanna be offensive (and well, you know that already) but um... The moment I looked at your layout, the word "Redoable" popped in my head... Almost like that Word Association Game! Let's say it was Magic 2.0! :D

^ I don't mind people being as creative and honest as they like and I don't get offended by people I have never met and probably never will.
I'm going to make some small changes to design now, i'll post in a few hours

I kind of like it, looks okay. Needs a lot of tweaking. The colors don't seem to match up so well too.

I said no on ajax becuase:
1) It's not needed and people like you are the reason ajax has a bad name. Well, not a bad name, because 'ajax' sounds freakin sweet, but a bad rep.
2) If it's all ajax, you can link people right to a certain part of the site.

^ Haha, actually no, I can use AJAX wisely and I wrote a massive AJAX hate article. This site is to showcase my skills at coding and so I need to impress future clients and my design skills aren't exactly great and showing the average person a piece of nicely formed code which is highly efficient WON'T impress.
And I know how to create deepinking using AJAX and I know how to make things degrade for those without javascript, at work I always code for those with nothing so no JS or Flash, then add JS in by using JS, so a JS autoload will bind functions to the nav and other elements.

I officially deem you not a n00bz0rz and grant you the right to use ajax on your site. On a trial bases of course ;).

^ Lol, I actually first read that as you deeming me a n00bz0rz and I typed a massive post arguing... i'm way too tired, for the last week the most sleep I have had is 6 hours.
Anyway, just finishing off new design, I'll post in about 30 mins

Needs accents and highlights!

The two column thing is interesting, but the fonts need a lot of work and the margins and paddings need a ton of tweaking. For some reason it just doesn't seem to "work" correctly. And like dm said, "Needs accents and highlights!".
