View Full Version : Cool night...

Alex
June 28th, 2003, 01:14 AM
i just got home from walking at the American cancer society walk. I walked 12 miles. There where over 2 thousand people there. Its to raise money for the cancer research. There are a bunch of teams, and at least one member of each team has to be on the track all night. And they can switch off when the need to.

It was really cool when they shut off the lights, and they played Amazing Grace with a bag pipe. And we walked around the track once. They had luminaries (SP) they where candles in a bag that where dedicated to the victims of cancer. They surrounded the track.

It was a great night, To bad i couldnt stay over night, i had to leave because my brother has to work tomorrow.

We raised alot of money for the research to a cure for cancer.:thumb: :A+:

That's good to hear. Cancer is cool. I wish I'd donated money to help the poor thing. I hear scientists have been trying to kill it for years. :P:P:P

EDIT:

Chicken**** eh? Well, that was pretty rude, mr. don't be rude.

I left because I was probably wandering around looking for a way to connect my PC to my Xbox.

I'm sorry if I offended anyone with my joke. I know for some people it's a sensitive subject, but that didn't come to mind.

Honest to god, I do care about Cancer and science's attempts to cure it. When canvasser's come to my door, if I don't have change in my pocket, I steal it from my mom.

I hope my trying to make light of a terrible thing can be accepted or forgiven, because it was only that, a joke.

Sorry again.

Excellent Alex! My mother and I worked the Relay for Life when it was done here. It is for a good cause, they did it at the college my mother works at. All the students and staff were out there on the track walking, they pitched tents on the campus so people who were not walking could sleep if they needed to. There was food, and they had live local bands play. All in all it was a good time for a great cause. :)

Cheers!

I wish I'd donated money to help the poor thing (cancer)

I hear scientists have been trying to kill it for years (meaning he is trying to help it because scientists are trying to kill it)

:P:P:P - means he was joking

sometimes jokes are just meant to be left unsaid.

Anywho, good job Alex, i'm glad to see you doing something productive other than sitting on the forums trying to pull an all-nighter :) I have lost many people close to me and I know how bad that feels. My friends mom died from cancer about a year ago, she is the only person I knew that had cancer.

RelandR
June 28th, 2003, 01:46 PM
I had to read it a couple of times because I couldn't believe what I was seeing...
-but it looks pretty clear to me-

then I typed a longAs.s reply only to delete it over and over until I settled for and posted only my *opening* remark ... the words I tried to write kept getting garbled in anger. I've lost a great many people in my life and more than I care to count to Cancer.

I hope to be pleasantly surprised - but don't expect to be - as the *alleged typo* exists in every sentence, true to the same theme (that of the Cancer being the victom and the money being raised to help "it"), along w/ the laughing smillies.

**quits now before rambling further**
inEdit:: Ergo my ten minute 'quick reply' :sure:

asphaltcowboy
June 28th, 2003, 01:49 PM
actually, those aren't laughing smilies.. they're sticking-tongue-out smilies, hence why you have to type : P to get them to appear. I'm not backing up Aislin, and I have no idea what he meant, and whether he was being out of order on purpose or not. if he was being truthful, then go ahead and ban or whatever. but who can judge before he's had his say?

I believe Aislin types faster than his head works. He thought he was making a funny joke, but forgot to think that many people have lost loved ones to cancer. I'm sure he would have deleted it shortly after posting it and thinking about how hurtful it was to some people. But Alex had already posted 2 minutes after him, so he didn't have much of a chance.

Good job in supporting such a worthy cause Alex.

Your apology is lackluster at best, but what can we expect. It was chicken**** of you to post and run. If you have a habit of making a comment, then never checking the thread again, maybe you should think about what comments you leave, and how necessary those comments are.

Grow up Aislin, you were banned once for your extremely insensitive sense of humor... You'd think you would learn from that experience.

Just because you are joking does not make it okay to say anything you want. You were the one who got upset when we were giving Canadians a bad time...

Remember, this is an electronic medium, your words will be interpreted in many ways.

And if you think that my statement above was rude, just try making another joke like this one, and you will see how rude I become.

One more time, become a positive part of this community.

Edit:

Removed because although it was very... true, it was slightly smartas sy, and I don't want anyone to get on my case about it.

Anyways, the gist of it was, take a joke sometimes, don't go nuts if it's too much, have the common sense to just tell me as much, without all this... namecalling.

At least Asphalt had the brains to tell me that I was needed in the thread before calling me a ... name.

Thanks.

Aislin:

I see no namecalling in this thread. I said the act of post and run was chicken****, nothing about you personally. I stand by that statement.

If you had read your post before you submitted it, just to see how it sounded, you wouldn't be in this pickle now.

How can you be so insensitive. Do you joke about Deaf people too? How about people with AIDS, do you have a quick witty anectdote for them?

That was what all the uproar was about. If your posts were contributive to the thread, you would want to check back and see the response.

Remember, posting here is a privelidge. My suggestion: Guarantee that privelidge remains by becoming a positive part of this community, not just another teenager that can type fast. Show everyone how much you are needed here. I know it's possible, it just takes effort on your end.

Let me say this:

My mom die of cancer 3 jears ago amd I dealt with it. I don't care what other people say, even if it's unintensionally rude and harsh. I could actually laugh at Aislin's post, 'cause it was too outrageous to even be considered true. The :P:P:P made it clear that it was meant as a joke.

The way I see it, is that reverendflash chose to ignore those signs. As he so nicely put it, 'Remember, this is an electronic medium, your words will be interpreted in many ways.
'.

And I would have to say that it is a subject not to be toyed with: cancer is not cool. I would think twice before posting a joke that could be so easely be misenterpreted(sp?). Remember: not everyone thinks as you. Hell, there are few people who think just like you.

Just my 2 cents on the subject.

actually, I didn't ignore the smilies, I assumed Aislin was joking. I agree with your jist however.

I just thought the joke was in terrible taste, and it should be said so, in public.

I am not angered, I have not called anyone a name. I am just trying to let Aislin know that this kind of humor does not belong here. Instead, he is trying to minimize the damage, and is playing it off as a whim. Aislin needs to know that he is responsible for every word he posts, and if he jokes like this in the world outside of the computer, he will prob get his face punched in, rather than a stern comment from a mod.

All Aislin had to do was give a heart felt apology instead of a "I guess I should apologize" half-felt reply. If that had happened, like any mature person would have done, then none of this nonsense would have happened.

The sad part is, Aislin will prob ignore this thread now.

Rev: You shouldn't have told off Asphalt. He was the only sensible one in this thread. Calling me down because I didn't look at a thread is cheap, immature, and very un-mod-like in my opinion. Asphalt is the only reason I came here to apologize. If he hadn't mentioned it to me, I wouldn't have known I'd done anything wrong. And by 'anything wrong' I meant offended people.

I'm glad I came back here to apologize to Alex. But not you, at least not anymore. You didn't want an apology, you just wanted another reason to yabber about why I'm a chicken****. What is this junk about knowing me? Knowing my one incident where I said "codecs suck?" Wow. You've got my record.

At least [M] has enough sense to see things as they are, and Alex and the rest who are a bit too attached to the subject can forgive it.

FYI: I won't be posting in this thread again. But I might not ignore it. I want to see what last words you have in store for me.

Sorry I got you into this Asphalt.

Quick Edit Before I Leave This Post Alone: by too attached I mean more attached than me. Some can take a joke, while some are more sensitive towards a subject. I can respect that. Still, the let it lie thing still applies with them. Forgive and Forget.

I never called you chicken****. I called your actions chicken****.

Think about this:

You are in a room with lots of people, and you can hear what everyone else in the room is saying. Would you tell that joke in that room, so everyone in the room could hear you? I think not.

Asphalt was saying that the whole thing was a typo. You have said it wasn't. You didn't get him involved, he got himself involved and ended up taking some flack for it.

[m] said the same things I have said many times, but you chose to listen to his words, and take offense at mine.

You are defending your right to make tasteless jokes about cancer. Do you really want to make this your stand?

My point about knowing you was not meant to imply that I knew you, but rather that asphalt did not have adequate knowledge to be your champion and defend you (he was wrong about your post being a typo).

I'm not sure what you mean by calling you down. I have not made this personal, you have. I have never called you a name, just said that your comment was tasteless, and insensitive. I stand by that comment.

If you don't know that making a tasteless joke about cancer or any other poor taste subject, then you shouldn't make jokes, especially in an electronic medium.

I can't believe you are taking this so personally, and that you won't just learn from your mistake, and move on.

One more time. I have not personalized this in any way. I'm just the one who wants to make sure that you know that this kind of joke does not belong here... ever. You should know this.
