I'm trying to teach myself Illustrator and i want to use a gradient for something, but i can't seem to manage to get any other colour than the standard black to white gradient.
It would seem to me to be as simple as clicking the wee colour boxes underneath the gradient bar like in Photoshop, but they dont work?!
Is this how you do it? i would have thought it would have been relatively simple!!

Either change the colors by using color sliders; dropping swatches or using the eyedrop tool while pressing shift to select colors from your work area.
Quite a number of people come across your problem and it's a weakness of illustrator in my opinion.

When I drop the colour swatches in, the standard black to white gradient are still there is there a way to delete the black and white?

you need to switch the color to like rgb, or hsb. There in the top right corner of the gradient pallete is a arrow. Click it and change the color profile. I really hate the illustrator gradient tool.
