View Full Version : Whats your favorite music genre

I live in Portland Oregon USA where the "for the most part" radios wave carry propaganda driven stereotyped top 100 crap which makes my ears bleed fecal matter :red:.So for the most part I stay to the web radios wave of 1&0's.
Before I became a programmer / designer I was hoping to become a producer / recorder / dj. I have since redefined what I considered to be good music, yet most of which can not be found on the radio. That makes me wonder, how many of you feel the same, and I think there's no better way then to see what the average music genre is favored here.
and to get an idea of what for the most part I think to be good music genre look here

Oh come on. Old School Punk not on the list?? Movie Soundtracks not either? I like ambient/downtempo/chill, but it's not my fave unless I'm actionscripting.

Alternative, Metal, Industrial, etc because I didn't see it on the list.

My personal favorite isn't listed - Industrial.
I voted for old/new techno, but you really should expand the category to electronica if you're going to lump Industrial, Noise, Darkwave, EBM and Synthpop all under the same label.

Al6200
07-24-2007, 10:37 PM
Would Boards of Canada / AFX / Sqaurepusher count as techno or would it count as ambient? Also, some of Radiohead's later work has a sort of techno-ambient style that's tough to put into either one.
Maybe electronica should be an option, since I think that helps to distinguish Crazy Front "techno" from Kid A, a down right awesome rock-techno opera.

This is a really bad poll.
Also Portland has a pretty awesome music scene from what I can tell. Modest Mouse kick it there, and they left freaking Issaquah for it, so there must be something right about the area for music.
Perhaps turn off the radio and go to a show?

You should add "oldies". Like from the Motown era. I like stuff like Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. Also Lenny WIlliams (Tower of Power). But I voted rap.

techno has two meanings -- it's funny -- for europeans they mean
stuff with no vocals, really underground "hard" stuff -- for
americans, when they say "techno", often they mean what in europe is
called "dance". And "dance" in europe is a lot more mainstream and
pop-oriented
for "american" style techno (i.e. european "dance"), the best example
I've found is this (itunes link):
http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSearch.woa/wa/advancedSearchResults?albumTerm=Euro+Club+Hits+Vol +
strangely it's called "euro club hits" ... which makes things even
more confusing ;
for "european" style techno... i.e. the stuff with no songs, I
recommend going to www.beatport.com and checking out the stuff in the
"techno" section

well, last.fm tells me I like:
1. Radiohead
2. Ghostface Killah
3. Spoon
4. The Beatles
5. Kanye West
6. The White Stripes
7. Wu-Tang Clan
8. Okkervil River
9. Daft Punk
10.OutKast
but this week I like:
1. Nas
2. Daft Punk
3. Ghostface Killah
4. M.I.A.
5. Okkervil River
6. Radiohead
7. Kanye West
8. Dr. Dre
9. The Monkees
10. Brian Wilson
I like a little bit of everything but you didn't have that category so I went with old-new techno.

Yeah, I thought Portland was supposed to be similar to Austin, with tons of really great local music.
With that said, I'm currently listening to KEXP, a Seattle station. :P

Interesting selection of genre's
I love how broad the rock category is.
You've grouped the people who like Fleetwood Mac and the Beatles in with the people that listen to Napalm Death and Cradle of Filth.
No wonder it's winning.

I like mostly metal and hardcore, no option for either in the pole so I voted for the first rock one.
I also listen to some mainstream techno? like prodigy and the crystal method. I also like some rap, basically anything that is heavy. F_ck, I'll listen to drum and bass if I felt it had some edge.

or
2) its really melodic and/or bouncy (generally hip-hop, rnb, and stuff)

The Beatles wrote "Helter Skelter" in response to the Who's "I Can See For Miles". The Blues existed long before the Beatles came on the scene. And they were hardly indie.

I enjoy alternative/rock the most. One of my favorite bands is The Spill Canvas, but Skillet and Decyfer Down are definitely creeping in there. Those bands are so amazing live and put on a great show. I tend to listen to all kinds of music, it just depends on the mood I'm in, but a majority of my music is from the alternative and rock genres.
