View Full Version : How is this style done? Tutorials?

I'm not surprised if this has been asked before, but I didn't really know what to search for so..
Anyway, I've seen a lot of this type of abstract design (http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/9721/3574yl4.jpg) style lately and I'm really curious on how it's done. If anyone have any tips or even better, tutorials to link to, that would be awesome :)
There are more design pieces over at depthcore (http://www.depthcore.com/artwork/19/).
I'm talking more of the non-3d ones. Cos I'm not too fond of going into 3d right now.
Cheers :)

Barrage of strange photographs/images/renders/illustrations -> crazy overlaid layers -> vivid colors -> brushing -> color overlaying -> blurring (to create depth in the bg) -> final touches (a little bit of digital painting involved) -> post production.
Or else you can leave all that and go straight to the digital painting part and literally paint pixel to pixel.

Pixel to pixel sounds nice:P
Thanks Phoenix!

Yeah what Phoenix said. As you mentioned this style is quite abstract so you don't really have exact steps, all you need is a bit of imagination and fooling around with the blending option and fades, layer effects, photo retouch, blur and so on. I'm not sure if tutorials exist for such art, because as it has been said, it's abstract... Just fool around with the filters and it will be good. ;)

PS: one thing I forgot to mention. Usually the basis of such art is a 3D software. You simply create some really abstract 3D shapes, mix them all up, render them and edit them in photoshop. After that is done, you can blend other pictures into the whole scene... It's all about imagination actually. :)

There was a Cinema4D tute on this in one of the creative magazines a few months ago i think. Guy was just applying random extrudes to any kind of shape, and just taking whatever was produced.
Can't remember the name of the mag though. maybe computer arts...

instead of ridiculous guessing, why not ask the author? 2advanced did some stuff like this a long time ago, they used 3d software and photoshop.

oh. sorry.
you mean that direct jpeg link. I can't see any author details on the actual file info after downloading it, and I'm not sure how to find the artist, so if you could furnish us with exactly who produced it, then please feel free to.theres A.N.OTHER link on the first post, with tons of the same abstract illustrations the threadstarter is wondering about. below each thumbnail is a link to the author and all his/her info, would you like me to hold your hand and walk you through it?

July 22nd, 2007, 06:18 PM
yes. i'd like you to show me who the author of the jpeg that was posted is, so that we can get more info as you suggest. I'm unable to find the abstract image that was posted in the other link, although your young eyes may find it there.
I actually started posting in this thread, because i did see a quick tute about this only a couple of months ago in a magazine i ordered in to the office i work at, and thought a point in the right direction might be helpful, but obviously you took that to be me being a ****wad for whatever reason, even after i asked you to figure out where the image came from so that the original postee could get some feedback, as you suggested.
well done for your intuitive feedback and friendly style of posting.

the whole point was you dont need to ask the author of that 1 exact image, apprantly the guys in the second link all know how its done, theres many similar styles so you could ask them as well. the "ridiculous guessing" wasnt directed at u...not at all. excuse the hell out of me for not providing intuitive feedback for your aged eyes but:
"any further updates on the author of A.N.OTHER jpeg then???
apologies....The FREAKIN a.n.other jpeg...."
just creeped me out a bit, i dont know why you stated "freakin" or "a.n.other" hence me asking whats wrong u. i was trying to say it might help the threadstarter if he asked around the authors to give him an exact idea, to confirm our guessing. geez no need to get all uptight about it, half the time i thought ur posts were jokes but i guess not :sigh:

I'm almost 20 actually and yes, I first started programming at the age of 5-6... What's so weird in that ? The whole freaking family consists out of programmers, guess what... But you know, I still love you noob !
PS: I had my first PC at the age of 4...

ok i'm confused about what this really is. and o12ib, you got pwned, unless you actually put banned there:P
and yeah, i suggest going the easy way, meaning, extruding from 3d, applying brushes in photoshop, and grungifying it:D

Apologies for jacking thi sthread with nothing but beered up retorts yesterday evening. I got into work this morning, and read through what was posted, and felt I could be more helpful, by finding something like the tutorial that I originally worked through in C4D...
so here goes...
http://www.visualdesigncore.com/tutorials/Cinema4d/Abstract-Renders-in-Cinema-4d/
Seems pretty simple enough. Took me about an hour if i remember rightly, to get to a stage where I was finished with the modelling.
