I heard a lot about Cowboy Bebop and asphalt mentioned it a couple of times in his posts, so I went to the shop and bought the 2 volume manga set: Cowboy Bebop: Shooting Star.
To be honest, it's OK, but I don't like it that much. Never saw the anime though, so I can't compare, but the manga (at least this version) is too boring for me. Sorry asphalt ;)
I would like to know your personal reviews for this list of manga (no anime):
1) Gunnm
2) City Hunter (I was a big fan of the anime)
3) Evangelion
4) Rurouri Kenshin
I'm searching for a good story, with a lot of action and stuff. :) Ideas? Recommendations? Even if not listed above?

You should expand the list with some Hentai too! :P

Does this stuff exist in manga too?!
Either way, I saw a hentai anime once... pretty weird if you ask me. :-/

well, actually, the main bulk of it was: my knowledge of manga isnt that great (thanks though kit :)) - I'm much more of an anime man myself (though obviously, most good animes used to be manga or vice versa). Can't say I've read any that you mentioned (I'm still watching Evangelion.. just not got any time atm ;)) but if you want lists of good animes and anime films, then I'm yer man.
Mangas: obvious essentials: Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop (;))
btw, wrt Cowboy Bebop, it's probably worth watching the anime first (which, incidentally, is absolutely brilliant). Once you get the format from watching the anime, I think you'll like the manga a whole lot more. The thing with Bebop is, there's a kind of vague, underlying story to the whole thing that runs all the way through, but this doesnt really surface until the last few episodes. The rest of the time, the episodes dont follow on from each other in normal anime series fashion.

yes, you can get hentai manga as well. though normally (since it's such a marginalised market) it's not often translated into english. either way, it's probably best to steer clear imo. it's not very nice.. and quite how it provides people with sexual gratification, I'll never know
:-\

Thanks. Sure, you can send me the list of good anime episodes and films. Always intrested. :)
I have Akira on DVD. Do you get all your episodes from DVD? Or from... well... the air? ;)
asphaltcowboy
June 25th, 2003, 07:36 AM
no no, Akira was originally a manga (6 editions I think?) and then they made it into a feature-length movie (the DVD). As good as Akira (the movie) is, it was difficult for them to compress over 2000 pages of manga into a normal sized film. which is why people find Akira (the movie) so difficult to understand sometimes. You should really read the manga, it clears everything up, which means you can enjoy the film a lot more (even though you'll see quite a few differences between the animated and printed versions) :)
I'll post a list of must-see anime series and films.. when I can think of them ;)
Kajinku
June 25th, 2003, 07:41 AM
I knew about the Akira manga. Didn't read those yet, but I know where to get them. There are different versions of the manga on the market. Glenat (French version) has 2 different versions:
- pocket manga (14 volumes)
- book manga (6 volumes)
Take your time for the list. :)

Amazon.co.uk sell Akira DVD's and books. :) Hopefully this link (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1840232579/qid=1056546743/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_3_1/202-3926267-5419846) will work... :)

Myeah... Appart from Cowboy Bebop: Shooting Star I also have the complete manga set of Dragon Ball. 42 books, about 5 or 6 euros each...
But, for me, this is the best manga (and anime) ever!
Hm, which reminds me I watched Ranma 1/2 a lot when I was younger. Loved that show, together with City Hunter who was called "Nicky Larson" on the French channel. Aaah, memories. :)

I really really don't like Dragon Ball. Apart from the fact that it's badly drawn and animated, the storylines are incredibly slow and boring.. they have looads of episodes between fights where nothing interesting happens (let's face it - the fights are the only reason you'd watch it) and then the fights themselves - the story writers manage to draw out fights over about 10 episodes where very little happens in each one.
drives me abosolutely crazy. :(

Well, for Dragon Ball, I recommend the manga. It's well drawn and the fight scenes are pretty cool. It's true that the anime is kinda sloooow sometimes, but there are good moments in it.
Episode 1:
A: You will pay for this!
B: No you will!
A: My force is greater than yours!
B: Hahaha!
Episode 2: (repeat 1)
Episode 3: FIGHT - part 1 of 6
:sigh:
Not that I want to start a manga war here, but I thought the Cowboy Bebop: Shooting Star manga was kind of repetitive too: big shot time, bounty hunters, woolongs... and I hate Ed. He's like a girl. :P Spike and Jet are cool though.

I liked Akira, Ghost in the Shell was good. The Love Hina Manga is really good esp if you are a fan of the show. The Manga goes into a lot more depth, as it usually does. :)
Must see Anime... Hmmmm Thats Quite a long list for me. Anyhow...
Ah! My Goddess (OVA and Movie are both good)
Green Legend Ran (Movie)
Bubblegum Crisis 2032 (2040 is good to, but the original is way ahead of its time)
Vampire Hunter D (Both the original and the sequal were excellent)
Tenchi Muyo! (OVA, the TV series were ok, but the OVA was outstanding.)
El Hazard (OVA)
Spirited Away
Princess Mononoke
That should be enough to get anyone started. :) If you need more suggestions I will be happy to give some.
Asphalt, I must admit I have never seen Cowboy Beebop, I have the first DVD sitting at home in the waiting to be watched pile, maybe I should move it to the top. ;) Is it hard finding Anime over in the UK? I am just curious. :)
Cheers!

Um.. well, I've ordered a few things off ebay before. It's not common to find anime in well-known shops (perhaps big HMVs at stupidly over-priced rates :)) I.. um.. tend to to .. *cough* download *cough* series, but obivously, if I like them, I'll have a good, extensive search around to see if I can buy them for reasonable amounts of money :)

I am in Chicago, USA. Ahhh that seems to be the UK version of say Sam Goody http://www.samgoody.com or Suncoast www.suncoast.com Here in the US. Its pretty much the same there the pricing is a bit high for my taste, but every once in a while you find a good deal. :) What region code are your DVDs?

2, but a lot of the new dvd-players are region free. and most of the anime dvds you buy on ebay aren't entirely official (made by proper companies.. but.. not originals if you get what I mean) so they're normally region-free discs

Blood: TLV was really good. Although I thought the ending left a bit to be desired. It just kind if stopped... :) Wow Guyver, there is a series I have not seen in a long time. Although The series was recently released on a set of two DVDs.
If you liked Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, you should try and find Kiki's Delivery Service, and Castle in the Sky. The same person directed them. I enjoyed both films. :)
I will move Cowboy Beebop to the top of the pile and hopefully will have time to sit and watch it in the next day or so. =)
I would also like to suggest Love Hina, Please Teacher, and Hand Maid May. All three are pretty funny.
Cheers!

I only have a few of the Guyver vids. Ok, so it's not that great a series any more.. but I might grab a copy of those two dvds at some point... if only for the sentimental value ;)
Yeah, I have no idea why they didnt make Blood into an OVA or something. I mean.. the film was so short! They could have made a great series out of it! And the animation and effects are absolutely stunning - still remember watching the opening sequence for the first time.. OMG! :beam:

Hey, I've just noticed this discussion =)
1) Gunnm
This has to be the best manga I've read, ever. The story is incredible, the fights are very nice, and the mix of spirituality, brutality, technology and some other 'y' words is just perfect. Glenat is publishing a sequel right now, and it's looking good!
2) City Hunter (I was a big fan of the anime)
I was a big fan of Nicky Larson too, but especially because of the voices of the bad guys :P Not too fond of this one.
3) Evangelion
I don't understand. Everybody loves this manga, I can't help finding it boring as hell.
4) Rurouri Kenshin
I've never read that one. There's a FNAC nearby, I might give it a shot soon.
And you HAVE TO READ Noritaka!! It's the funniest manga I've read so far, hands down. Totally pathetic, completely stupid, but you'll die laughing...

Cool, I will check this one out then :) I've heard a lot about it, but I don't want a manga like those "Storm" comics (which suck if you ask me).
