i always thought that this was out of date now because modern screens can handle almost every colour..... ??

If you want to play it super-safe, use the standard 256 colour pallette. However, I really don't think this is necessary these days.

there is no such thing as web-safe color palette. there is web-compatible color palette. but that's nit-picking.

we all know that every user has a different setting on their monitor.. so for me i still do go use by using common color such as black and white and some sort of contrast color..

i agree with ar3d, most time i prefer use web palette due to different display setting. by the way, there're designer whom think that the web palette limit our ideas and that is entirely false. i bought this swatches book and there is a section for websafe colours and i was amazed about the huge combination you can achieve. all kind of combination, basic, active, quite, rich, progressive, muted, and so on.
the limit is our creativity.
