If you have PhotoShop, it can be done using the Blur filters and then importing the image into Flash. If you don't have PhotoShop (or any program alike), you might wanna try doing that by playing around with the color mixer. From Gray-70% alpha to Gray0% alpha should do it.

No, if you import an image you can't edit it anymore in Flash itself. You can though when you've got Fireworks MX, but that's not actually in Flash, but it's useful. The image opens in Fireworks MX then and there's an update button, so the changes you made are automatically added to the image in the Flash library. But if you don't, you'll just have to change it in PS.

just do a blurred gray box (that would act like the shadow) and put a white box (or with a gradient i couldnt see well) in flash over that pic... that should do the job, and shouldnt be too ugly when you resize it...

alright here it goes.. ok the drag thingy doesnt werk right i didnt have time to think it enough but it should do the job:
look at this link: http://membres.lycos.fr/mlkdesign/kirupa/shadbox.swf
here's the fla: http://membres.lycos.fr/mlkdesign/kirupa/shadbox.fla
and the shadow pic:http://membres.lycos.fr/mlkdesign/kirupa/shadow.jpg
It works OK when the ratio aint big (ie width/height , otherwise it looks fuzzy..

Create a rectangle in Flash (for rounded corners you can select the rectangle tool and in the tools panel it shows an icon at the bottom with a rounded corner).... remove the outlines and select the rectangle shape.... go to Modify/Shape/Soften Fill Edges, mess with the settings to achieve what you want.
Well thats at least a method to do it in Flash if you don't have Photoshop ;)

You create it by using the rectangle tool in Flash.
Select your color for your fill and set your outline to none (or delete it after you create your rectangle shape in Flash), after you create your rectangle shape click on the fill (rectangle of color) on the stage to select it and go to Modify/Shape/Soften Fill Edges
Mess with the settings there. I believe I used 50px distance, 50 steps, and set it to outset or something like that.
Hit Ok and it will add the softened edges to your fill.
As for the AS, I was joking because mlk made his resizeable and such and I just didn't feel like doing that.

If you want a black shadow use a black rectangle for the "Soften Fill Edges" :-\
Then on the layer above it, create your white rectangle.
