If you don't know, why do you want to use it? ;)

for the IIS and framework to learn ASP.NET

happy:sigh:

I'm on XP Pro, it's not too horrendous. :)

Never used the Home version though, but I think the Pro just has more 'features'.

Home is too dilly-dally. you don't want to use it ever again.

Thor - You have Stewie in your footer! Excellent choice. :)

when installing a new OS, it's always a good policy to reformat imho

Kitiara
June 19th, 2003, 05:09 PM
Agreed, reformat and start from scratch. Windows will always find some way to go wonky if you install over as an upgrade...

chris9902
June 19th, 2003, 05:12 PM
i could just put every thing on disk i guess.

June 19th, 2003, 05:13 PM
yeah, but the problem is, i don't think you'll be able to access your old My Documents folder once you install another version of windows. if you run across this problem, lemme know, i'll guide you through it.

i know for a fact that he won't because i couldn't. it sucked big balls.

what if he moved all the files in the My Documents folder to a folder right on the root drive?

also, you may be able just to upgrade to pro w/o any problem...if it weren't windows xp i wouldn't suggest this, but i think microsoft has a pretty good product here...i don't know for sure b/c i've never tried.

Uhm, the only difference I can think of is the effect of the CTRL+Alt+Del command and the ability to have Power Users. Other than that, they're the same, in my book.

chris,

burn all your files to cd's as a backup. that way if they get deleted, you're not freaking out.

i guess you havent fooled around with the administrative tools, windows xp is just win2k made prettier and easier, win2k3 server now thats what im talkin about this is a solid OS so solid you gotta enable most of the things in order to make it work as a workstation and not a server, Im in love with win2k3 at the moment, now if i can only figure ut how to make a ftp with this blasted cable modem with crazy ips  lol

I like the looks of XP over all the previous grey looks. Other than that, I guess that was the only reason I upgraded.

Chris, I upgraded from Home to Pro a while back, had a little bit of trouble. You have to first download the 6 Floppy XP Pro startup disk, run that, and it'll convert you to Pro. The only problem I had is duplicate folders. Like, before, I used Maxtr0sity as my username, and now I use plainly use Max. Old folders are still there named like "My Documents.Maxtr0sity" and the ones currently are like "My Documents.MAX," I don't mind the change, but it's a bit annoying.

Grimdeath, care to show me a screenshot of Windows 2003? I'm curious on how it looks, more of a Windows 2000 interface or XP?

Reformatting is the best way out though. The only good thing about upgrading is that it saves some of your installed stuff.

Before you format, make sure you save:

Favorites
Calendars
Address Books
Saved Games
Saved Anything Else
Exportable Things
Cookies, if you can't remember all your passwords like me

Thats all that I can think of for now.

heres a screenshot o my desktop, its basically win2k with new enhanced security, stability and 64 bit (depends on your processor) but you can enable all the pretty things of win xp on it, i had to enable a few services like my direct x drivers and my wia (windows image acquisition) servies in order to get my camera and be able to watch movie on my pc, so win2k3 is not intended for the home user its made for what its named after a SERVER, but if some home users install it and think it sucksjust check this out if your having any problems with printers or any other device on your pc

looks good grim

what i am going to do is buy the UPDATE version not the FULL becuase having XP home i get it 1/3 off the full price.

then i am going to save EVERY thing on about 10 CD's then get someone to wipe the system, install XP pro then copy all my files back.

that should cover it.

thanks for the help guys

dude its as simple as backing up all your data on cd and just restart your pc with the windows xp cd and follow the on screen instructions, windows xp will format your hd so save some money and do it yourself besides you will learn a little something, its not like in the old days of win95 or 98 where you had to use a boot disk and create the cdrom driver in dos, man windows has improved alot :beam:

Grim: The Windows 2003 looks amazing. Not much graphical difference between it and Windows 2000.

Chris: Good luck on the format, I'd suggest you do it yourself too. It'd teach you something good. Plus, once you know it, you'll do it more often.

i've never learnt that side of computers as i have never needed to. my machine came with windows XP home but at the time i was ok with it, but then i bought Flash etc etc and learnt a bit of HTML, but now i am quite serious about doing it for a job so i thought i would learn PHP or ASP and i went with ASP or ASP.NET as it is now.

but now i have to buy Access 2002 and windows XP pro, but that is ok becuase it gives me a reason to get a job and stop sitting round the house test AS or HTMl to see what i can do.

thanks Grim you have really helped me with this and the ASP stuff:)

Always fun to experiment though.

Good Luck.

O yea, don't forget to have a second computer with internet just incase you screw up somewhere if you decide to do it yourself.

I format my computer every few weeks because I like the rush one gets after booting a freshly-formatted computer for the first time :C:-) I save EVERYTHING of value in my My Documents folder, and before a format, I simply backup my entire My Documents folder so that after a format, everything is back.

Of course I do search for *.dbx Oulook Express e-mail files, bookmark from IE (bookmark.htm), .pst Outlook 2003 e-mail files, and any random files that I find in other folders such as Game Saves.

Format once, and you'll instantly be hooked!

Cheers!

Same with me, I do enjoy the instant 10 second boot the first time, it's a computer high. Watch out for those Outlook files, I keep on forgetting to back them up.

Thanks

I hate reformatting on xp home.. every time i do it just takes 3 hours but nothing happens.. it just hides everything.. nothing is actually gone.. i end up with like about half of my hard drive taken up every time i do it.. and i know windows doesnt take up 15 gigs

I never reformatted XP before, but I've heard it's hard. I guess it's just another thing Microsoft puts in to prevent "hackers" or say not.

hahah I thought I was the only one.

I love to format computers and re-install everything just to get it the exact way you want it. I mean you make so many different choices and mistakes and you learn from them. Then you format and you dont make the same mistakes again and things run better and better.

We really are computer geeks I guess :)

Yeah, a lot of programs shouldn't have been installed sometimes. Formatting starts over and you know more.
