PEAR?

I'm reading a book right now trying to learn php and mysql and it talks about using PEAR, in your opinions is this something I want to learn? I don't know how common it is so I thought I'd ask. Thanks.

don't bother, unless your application really needs it or using PEAR greatly improve your productivity. some hosting services don't have PEAR. so your PEAR dependent app isn't portable.
