To explain the title; heres what I noticed today.

I was opening two old projects, f8 format .. editing and resaving as cs3.

Nothing interesting happened there, the filesizes of the 2 files changed a bit, but not considerably.

However, when I saved them as f8 from cs this happened

File1 decreased from 8.5MB to 2.5MB
File2 decreased from 13MB to 7MB

Eeeeep? What just happened? : )

Saving AS performs a save and compact. This takes longer to save, but reduces file size by getting rid on unnecessary data and redunancy. You didn't get that with F8 -> CS3 because you're saving over the same file using the default save. Saving as F8 from CS3 is a save as operation.

Thats definitely useful information.

I take it that logic works with saving a cs3 file as another cs3 file as long as you use save AS ?
