I'm not buying that all of those images on the screenshots page were actually made by you for the game. Other than that, I went to "test the game" and couldn't figure out which one was the actual game.

some of those images are drawn by my artist's and this game is still under development

Er, how bout correct spellings and grammar.... Oh, and your menu screams template to me. learn how to correctly implement a background image, Awesome is not a word I would use to describe this site in the condition it is in right now.

yeah... your forums and also many parts of the site don't match up in colors and form either... Maybe you should look into that as well

flashdragon
April 28th, 2007, 05:58 PM
OK............maybe you could suggest some things like what colors

Didn't you have artists for that ?

Theros

well, try colorlovers.com for some color pallets. Also, you have some color scheme going on the menu bar, why not try to carry that over to the rest of the site?

Oh, I forgot you didn't make the menu did you? (sorry, if I'm wrong on this.... just screams dreamweaver to me)

oh, and one look at the source! IT IS dreamweaver lol.

excluding design, never use spaces in file names on the web. I also suggest you start fresh or add some graphics to the site. Its basically some tables with background colors. Also use a more subtle background. The one you have now slapped me in the face.

Your site looks like arse, it's horribly unprofessional. If you can't spell basic words, I wouldn't try to be a gaming journalist (or any journalist, I suppose). Seriously, just give up, you're going to fail anyway. :|

I'm not a fan of the background picture either, particularly the way it's tiled. I get an error message in IE7 too:
'menuitem1' is undefined

The white heading font is unclear and too close to the Gaming Top 200 button. That background image was so grim it made me ill. I couldn't click anywhere else in case I saw another one like it...sorry!

There's no need for that! The idea that a person telling someone else that they are going to fail and to just give up is down right rude and disgraceful... and I certainly wouldn't have expected that from a member of Kirupa forums! This person has posted in the Showcase and Critiques section so that he can learn, not to be told that he's a failure!

Now that that's out of the way... flashdragon, your site is basically a barely modded template from Dreamweaver. Firstly, before creating your site, you need to sit down with a pencil and paper and write out the main functions of your site, then write out what you want on each site page. Next, you need to sketch out on a piece of paper some initial design layouts. Basically muck around with positioning the content but on paper first. Once you've done that, think about the looks of the site. Do you want to includ in game pics? Or maybe have site elements made out of concept art or specifically made pieces just for the site? Stick to something simple and not overcomplicated. As well as going to http://www.colourlovers.com to find some good colour schemes, look through website galleries for inspiration on how sites should look/function. A few examples are: http://www.cssbeauty.com, and http://www.csselite.com/. If you want more such design resources, then check out this thread here: http://www.kirupa.com/forum/showthread.php?t=62016

or for more examples of CSS galleries/etc... see this thread here: http://www.kirupa.com/forum/showthread.php?t=223117

Oh and whatever you do, don't use that tiling background, or backgrounds that are not meant to be tiled. :P

Hope this helps! :)

Also anyone telling someone else that they are going to fail is a big mean guy.

I am not so sure about the website):

Maybe he can learn that he's going to fail and examine why. The world ain't rainbows and gumdrops, and if he can't exhibit more than a 2nd grade writing level, then he most certainly is going to fail.

His site sucks, he isn't capable of being an even remotely successful gaming journalist at this point, and he's going to fail. Maybe he should go get fresh air instead of wasting his time failing. :|

And Jeff, my little 12 year old friend, you apparently have yet to learn that honesty and 'meanness' are not the same thing, but they often feel the same if you're a particularly sad individual.

I'd rather give praise than brutal honesty, but when it comes down to it, if you produce a crappy product, I respect you enough as an adult and a designer to tell you so. If you're miserable and untalented, I'll tell you that too. If you're not an adult, you should be out getting fresh air or something.

I respect that you're telling him what you think of his, but to say that's he's a failure and shouldn't continue is not really nice. If people really badly want to do something and put their mind to it, and put the hard work in, then they can achieve their goals! Plus if he's only 12 then, his spelling and grammar (writing skills) can increase and get better. I know mine did from when I was 12.

flashdragon: Screw fresh air... Keep working on your site if it's something you like doing! :D

But definitely keep an open mind, and pay attention to the critiques people are giving you here, it's really valuable stuff, and it'll improve your design immensely... But try to ignore the discouraging insults - you have to start somewhere, man. And you are getting an early start, which is commendable! You have a lot to learn, for sure, but stick around here and you definitely will learn :D

Anogar: Wow. You remind me of Dwight Schrute from The Office.

Brutal honesty set aside, there is a very distinct difference in attitude between "Your site is really bad" and "Your site looks like arse"

The latter feels like its coming out of the mouth of someone that has not passed second grade.
