Not only is Microsoft discontinuing IE for Macs, but there is a possibility that both Apple and Microsoft will do something that will greatly effect the web today... in a negative way.
Apparently Microsoft is planning to stop releasing IE as a free browser and start packaging it with the Windows Operating System. Yep thats right, the possibility of "Update this now" may become "Buy a new OS with the update now". Yes, microsoft is evil for doing this, but guess what... Apple may be thinking of doing the same with their new Safari browser!
I can't make anymore points that aren't stated here...

I recommend reading that, I am completely shocked.
BTW: This is NOT a Microsoft vs Apple debate thread, it's about the possibility of what may happen to the future of the web as we know it.

I don't see how it's THAT big of a deal. You can still use mozilla or something like that, plus you can still get IE 6 for free.
I'm more worried about the tax on the internet thing. That'll be horrible.

Web functionality wise.
Think about how many MORE compatibility issues will exist on the web if you have to update your OS to update your browser.

That is just frigin' great..... as it is now web designers are catching hell trying to design sites cross platform, cross browser and in multiple version of each browser, Now we are going to have people stuck with IE 6 becuase the can't afford an os update, not to mention mac users like me... which is a whole nother issue... life just keeps gettin' better

i think that with most companies and stuff like this is that its a business. people are competing to earn more money, even if it will make their product worse. idunno, i guess it's kindof like cars. one company makes suvs and trucks, while another makes every type of car. the first company may put alot of effort and work into the 2 cars they make, while the second company puts less into their cars but makes more money because they sell more. they are all competing for our money, and even though it's stupid, we have to live with it.:scream:

Yes, It seems that Power Corrupts All, Lost. That's turning the whole WWW into a piece of junk and a total corruption, Just because of Microsoft's new ''not-coherent-at-all" strategy. But After all, can't we just use mozilla as what nali stated? Though am not bounded to It and not slightly sagacious if it contains any more bugs than IE. However, this process of updating into mozilla would Imperceptibly be growing and People would stick to the buggy version of IE, IMO.

I agree, but as for just switching to 3rd party browsers, we COULD do that, but that still doesn't eliminate that other people would still be using the most current browsers.
For web designers could you imagine? Web designers are supposed to ensure cross browser compatibility through browser types and versions, which means web designers are almost required to keep up with the most recent browsers to make sure that it works correctly on the new browsers as well as the old.
And imagine people who use OSes like Linux, they usually download the free version of IE, but now they don't have that option, they have no choice to switch to Mozilla or some other third party browser. I know I wouldn't want to be forced to switch my default browser if I am used to using a certain one.

sounds like a plan!
this really does suck big time.. I thought MS weren't allowed to ship IE with OSs... didnt they get in trouble for that last time?

MS makes IE why would they get in trouble for shipping their own browser with their own operating system :q: :P
BTW: IE comes installed with Windows anyway.

Wow! This is really sad news. But i hear what you guys are saying with mozilla. but a problem will still lie there, you are using the Netscape kernal right? and arent most sites coded prodomadly for IE? I think you can see what i mean. still this is horrible. I really think a petition to both MS and Mac would be great. But not one on the boards, one on a site, that way we can post it on were-here, tutorialforums, and billybussey. Seriously, we cant let this go to far.

The newest versions of Netscape and Mozilla (which both run off the Gecko engine) do support more than previous versions, there are still things that don't work, but those are usually "decorative" things and not functionality things.

Reland... I think you are right that we start with Billy and the evil empire, Jobs may fall in line.....it would be in his best interest. not that Mac is all that great but Apple allows for the existence of MS in building software but MS does allow mac ..I think this should change....

Yeah - I've got to give him credit ... I can open and deal with much more window~centric stuff with my Precious than the other way round with the ...er... appliance next to it =) =) =)
...but seriously, I still feel under the gun all the time to spend more just to keep up. I mean all the neat stuff and there flying out of Cupertino faster than I care to make so many changes.

You see? That's why I would much rather choose to use another OS if I could. I can't possibly use Linux because I'm not a network freak, I don't want to use Mac OS because then i'd have to buy a whole new computer (i've built all my computers from scratch, i'm not stopping now), and i don't wanna use BeOS because nobody's heard of it.
That's why I propose from this day forward, i'm going to start development of my own OS which I will call "Doors", or "Thoridoors" whichever one sounds better. It will be free to the public, require all deletion of any trace of any Microsoftware on your computer. Of course, you will still be able to run all your windows-compatible software on it because the shell is going to be a direct rip from the XP version of windows. The only modifications i will make is to change *.crappyOS to *.goodOS and of course plaster my name and image all over the "floor" (which will be a replacement of the traditional "desktop").
Developments should begin last June.
My OS will require Flash player 6 or higher

what i really would like to know is why people complain about it when most people on the net are using pirated OS, pirated appz among other things, but it is f@cked up that these people can do as they please and thers nothing we can do about it, because in the end we can b!tch all we want but they will always have their way

Grim - This is honeslty not a problem for the home user. It's more of a corporate problem.
Huge companies are the ones that will feel the tingle in their wallets, cause they MUST have new software, new browsers, new OS's.
I honestly couldn't care less about which OS I'm on as long as I can use it as easily as windows, and I care even less about which browser, so long as it's as good or better than IE. It's not like there isn't five hundred options for each.
Thor -
Will this Floor have a wallpaper-like functionality? Perhaps Tiling, or Carpet?
I'd like a floor carpeted with the kirupa logo.
