This is an effect that has baffled me for 2 years now. I've been browsing around the forum and i don't see much of this effect around here...does anyone know how to do it?

i'm sure you don't know what i'm talking about, so here are some examples from shadowness.com ...

http://shadowness.com/indyart.php?anthriel
http://shadowness.com/indyart.php?phantasma
http://shadowness.com/wallpapers.php?sacrifices
http://shadowness.com/wallpapers.php?vibrancy
http://shadowness.com/wallpapers.php?insanity%20dimension

i've also gone through that whole list of tutorials in the sticky thread...with no luck:*(

i think these involve using some brushes and then filtered, but i can't seem to do it right :-\
anyone with enlightenment?

mmhh... they might have used
a) brushes to smudge a white shape to all sides (but doin' it by hand is laborious)
b) filters such as radial blur set to zoom - but it wouldnt look as nice
c) lots of using color dodge and experimenting with contrasts...

dont think i cant help you much though - try experimenting all techniques... you'll never find a filter capable of doing such things on its own...

most of the works say "photoshop +[some other 3d program]" - try emailing the artists for some advice or tips :)

i *think* that all the cool curvy bits and wispy stuff etc (which is the hard part to replicate) are somehow done in 3d, and then blurring and contrast etc can be added in thru photoshop after

i have a feeling that electrongeek can do this kinda thing, so maybe he'd be able to help you (and everyone else interested :P)

yea...i noticed the 3d elements of the images. these i understand can only be done in a 3d program, so i'm wondering how they do the rest of it.

hm yes, you can't get a filter to do this. that i know :p

however i still can't get something satisfactory. pie, which curvy bits you talking about? the 3d one? or the shockwave effects?

hsadan, those effects aren't too hard, maybe these 2 tutorials would give you an idea.

If I had more time then I would write up a tutorial for this, but unfortunately time isn't something I have much of....

That's a good start gpdesigner. =)

Replode, if I find more then I'll post more, also check out the tutorial thread in this section as well.

I got curious and tried the tutorial as well, it took me about 20 min to put this one together so it's not exactly how I want it to be. :P

If you're using PhotoShop, apply a Ripple filter first with all settings to maximum, and then apply Radial Blur. It will give it a better look, experiment with it.
