I stopped at brown belt - had to move and go to a city that did not have the same style (Wado Ryu) that I had trained in for so long :) I'm glad though, for I didn't particularly enjoy martial arts.

Cheers!

In which order are these belts (worst->best) ? I wanna know what I have in counter-strike?

I used to do karate when I was diddy. Then more recently, Wing Chun kung fu. Which is good, beecause they teach you how to defend yourself again real-life/realistic kinds of attacks. unfortunately it got too expensive. but it did wonders for my stomach! ;)

imo, karate is much good self-defence-wise. good for fitness though :)

Syko: the belt varies quite a lot methinks

Just as Kit, I practice Shotokan : the belts are as follows:

White, Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Brown, Black, 1st dan, 2nd dan, 3rd dan, ... until 5th or 6th dan, not sure.

At least at least none of you have had the humiliation of having to spar with a partner who's a foot and a half taller than you. :)

Have you any idea how embarrassing it is when your head only reaches about halfway up the other guy's chest? :P

I love karate though. I did Tai Chi as well for a while. :)

asphaltcowboy
June 12th, 2003, 05:29 PM
er! not true. I was a right short-arse ;)

anyway. I feel proud of myself for actually doing exercise for a change! another upside: now that I can barely walk, it gives me an excuse to surf kirupaforum.com all day :P

Hehe true, but the black belt test was going to be tough...and I really didn't enjoy attending class. In hindsight, I'm glad it all worked out for the better =)

Kit, I am not really tall either (5'4 (laugh it up everyone :)) - I am short by most normal standards. That was another reason why I disliked Karate class. So basically, I had that humiliation almost all the time!

Cheers!

i have 2 black belts -

both are leather, one has a silver buckle, one has a gold one. :P jk

honestly, I really enjoy martial arts. I studied Tai Chi for a few
years but unfortunately fell out of habit with it. I'd love to start
into some fighting form. More than likely it would be King Fu since
that's the style that peaks my interest the most.

Congrats to all that have succeeded in it. I think it's a wonderful
accomplishment.

studied shotokan for a wee while...

2nd Dan...

good style...

as far as the self defence aspect goes i guess it depends on who teaches you...

although it has to be said when you look at a lot of ppl it is a shame when you see them wearing a gi and a high graded belt and their form is not good you have to question whether it is them or their instructors fault...

a lot of charlatans in the martial arts world...

who simply take the money for the gradings and run...

used to do a liitle bit of tai chi as well but had to stop when the class broke up...

would love to to learn wing chun but there are no classes near me...

black belt @ fek u 2 he he...

i give you my address in a PM, so you can come and we can kick each other ... lol!

Hey kit!, its really cool when you fight people taller than you.
i like to kick those guys heads off. and they are slow... and only use KICKS and kicks. they are kind dumb lol! :P.

and whats with Shotokan!, is that the only style or what :p... personally i dislike karate.. specially the forms... not stylish enough.. but i like the sparring (well some) of the ppl that train karate.

Hurray for KF

i am 6'1 and used to do Judo, i was really good but then i found Girls and booze and it went the way of iraqOk - time for a clarifcation of a gross error on my part. I am not 5' 4" but actually around 5' 7"/5' 8" (two medical reports have it reported differently). That's what happens when one tries to convert from CM's to inches using the wrong conversion number :)

I just noticed that a few seconds ago when my most recently diagnostic check came back. I'll probably get defragmented soon, so that'll be good!

EDIT: Crazy IM'ers. No, I was not searching for this thread in particular, but I was curious to know how many people took part in martial arts. So much for my cloaking ability :)

missed this one:

took Okinawan Go Shu Ryu (one of the original root forms)

and American Karate.

Friends have taken, Ninjitsu, Kung-Fu, Judo, and Karate - and there were a couple of other friends that could just wrestle the crap out of you ...so my experience is varied lol.

as far as the someone taller deal - when i was little little kid my sparring partner was in high school and i was in elementary school...so yeah my point zone went to 0 lol. I still remember triying to hit him in the chest any way I could, even if it was illegal haha.

I took Wado Ryu for a really long time (I think about 6+ years). I wasn't too interested in it, but I never really bothered quitting. Luckily, my parents and I moved right after I received my brown belt, for I am not sure how much longer I could have survived there haha.
