It's clear that you get the basic idea. Keep going with it. For the cereal, try rotating the individual pieces in random directions. Please do more and post them. If you run into problems there's help to be had here.

If you are going vector- keep the lines nice and clean. The rough paint work around the edge ruin the vector effect.

Adobe Illustrator is generally the first choice for this. You can also do it in Fireworks, Flash, Freehand and a number of other apps out there for Windows and/or Mac.
