DEAR ABBY: Can you tell me how to mend an American flag? Ours is badly torn in two places. We put it up shortly after Sept. 11 and have flown it on its brass flagpole ever since. We want to treat it with respect, but don't know if there is a specific protocol. Please help. -- PATRIOTS IN CARBONDALE, ILL.


DEAR PATRIOTS: When a flag is damaged or faded, it should be retired and replaced. According to the American Legion Flag Etiquette brochure: "When a flag has served its useful purpose, it should be destroyed, preferably by burning. For individual citizens this should be done discreetly so that the act of destruction is not perceived as a protest or desecration."


Many American Legion Posts conduct Disposal of Unserviceable Flag ceremonies on June 14, Flag Day, each year. There is a Web site: www.legion.org. (Click on "Our Flag.") This ceremony provides a dignified and solemn way of disposing of unserviceable flags.

I remember that stuff. In a school I used to go to about 6 or 7 years ago, we had to learn the proper procedure to hoist and dismount the flag. Groups of three or four of us would have to go out every morning and afternoon and fold/unfold/hoist/dismount the flag every day :)

lol reverend, we have some guards like that in the states, but just not as widespread.

I live in New York, no one is really uptight about it, I live in a middle class neighborhood, not many people hang flags at all, and the ones that do, the wind often blow them off and fly down the street by the wind. It's funny becaues we'll find our flag in our mailbox sometimes. :)

hmm...yes the british gaurds are a rare breed. I made all these faces at them and still they didn't do anything. It's pretty cool actually, I wish i could stand still like them and have the concentration level like them...or do you think they pump themselves with something so their minds are ...dozing.... how can they maintain their composure with people like me running around making wierd noises and faces? :P
