Yeah, the beta (actually released about a week ago) is very nice, but I find the new xserver settings annoying. It disables the keyboard shortcuts to move around the different terminals, so when it crashes, I can't fix it very easily.
On the live cd, I have to always boot into safe graphics mode (there is no way to fix it when I choose normal and it fails) and then manually modify the xorg file. :-/
They should leave the normal settings intact, at least until GNOME loads.

I just cant wait till I get my 500GB external hard-drive arrives so I can run it off there on school comps... [although first i'll have to shortcircuit the motherboard and BIOS chip so I can bypass the BIOS password and set to boot off USB]

Yes, but I'm not going to boot into Windows just to play games and just boot into Linux just to do work... kinda silly isn't it? Also, well I heard with WINE I have to do some major hardcore configuration for each game to work....

I noticed that on our machines there is a BIOS password, but you can avoid the boot settings by simply directing it to go to the boot menu (F12). On most machines, e.g. Dells, there is no way to turn this off, so it should be a safe bet to get into the machine.
I'm able to boot off a thumb-drive and cd that way.

Yay, I have it running (server), now I have to decided to either keep Fedora or UbuntuPersonally i prefer Ubuntu. From the reviews I read it seems to be the most user friendly.
Also to find other Linux and BSD distributions you can go here: http://www.distrowatch.com
There are many intresting distributions out there :)

However I am sure that a lot of help can be found in the linux community. In the end it is this community that makes linux a better option then windows! I believe Wine questions can also be asked at the Ubuntu forums :)

Those CD's actually cost them something, and downloading 700Mb - 1Gb most should not be something that hard with todays internet connection ;)

Personally I thought here at kirupa everyone was a vista or Mac fanatic! Did not believe there was any space for Linux :) good to see there is some interest in Linux here as well.
Also at novell.com there are some funny videos on Linux compared with PC (Vista) and Apple (MacOSx).

I have a ATI Radeon 9800 XT and it all worked out of the box with beryl + compiz. Only problem is I have to redo all my hacks to get a 1280x1024 resolution.

^ nvidia issues are to do with nvidia redoing the structure of the G80 chip (8800 range) which is totally different than the previous cards, so it can't use the same drivers as the rest of the family and basically it's driver support is not exactly there, including the linux ones.
Thanks hybrid101, still didn't work though. :(

for linux gaming look into Cedega 6.0 . Phoronix had a copy but Transgaming asked them to remove the preview.
http://www.tuxmachines.org/node/15006
While id Software and Epic Games are among the few major companies that are Linux gaming patrons, if you've been wanting to play such games as Battlefield 2142 or Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, you will now be able to do so starting April 14! Next week Transgaming will be introducing Cedega 6.0 "Swordfish".
Among the features are increased performance, usability improvements, and a horde of new games support. Phoronix was fortunate enough to receive an advanced media release copy of Cedega 6.0 and today we will be just hitting the tip of the iceberg when it comes to all of the changes that make up this release.
The major titles that have been added to the support list in Cedega 6.0 "Spearfish" are Battlefield 2142, Need for Speed: Carbon, and Madden NFL 07. Support for Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is also now fixed for proper support. Another hot game to receive support by Transgaming is Blizzard's World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade. Also in this release will be improvements for Steam and plenty of other game titles.
for the BIOS password thing, you can easily reset the password.

First of all, some of my fiends have actually run games such as Half-Life 2 and Oblivion on Linux using Wine :) and that is saying something. It is true that it needs some playing with the settings, but if you are into those things that you will definitly enjoy it and learn something in the process.
Second, it is true that many windows software can not be found for linux. However do not let that to put you down there are a lot of software out there for linux that does the same thing as other software for windows. Here is a handy link ;) : http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Linux_software_equivalent_to_Windows_software
I understand that going from one OS to another is not nice and neither is something you should consider. However I do sugest you at least have both Linux and Windows installed on your PC. First of all you start getting familiar with it, and second, you never know what OS you will find on your working place (your company could do the right thing and turn everything to Linux ;)).
Anyways Regards,
Good Luck,

Yep, that is true though... Although, I don't have to worry about the company thing because I'm far from that point.... But, I'll probably set up a dual boot or at least buy another HD to put linux in just to play with it. I've seen what it can do especially since Redhat back in the day didn't really impress me, but Ubuntu on the other hand really does improve on the whole thing.

@Sim085, hehe those vidoes are great.:thumb2:
Putting my hand up and saying I am a Linux user!
Yeah I got vista through MSDNAA and my university... needless to say I was heavily unimpressed. I dual boot Ubuntu and XP. I still use XP because 1. It is not broken. 2. I am only on a lowly AMD 3500+ with nforce 3, although I have just about maxed out my systems capability by puting a NVIDIA 7600GS, 3gig of ram and 2x250g satas. (drools over core 2 duo).
I spend 90% of my time in ubuntu, where as a year ago I didn't even want to touch a linux os.
I really want to install this... but then I can't play my WIndows games without extreme settings and all those extra steps meh waaaa
One of the reasons I switched to NVIDIA from my 9800XT.
I agree that setting it up is annoying. Mainly being an end user I never really got into all the command line stuff (I have a friend that runs fedora and only uses bash terminals, no GUI for him!) but I found that I really enjoyed using terminals and the logical progression of typing commands to do things, what started out as a hobby turned into full time computing. You get used to it and it feels like you have more comtroll over the system if you know how to break it then fix it hen break it and fix it...(trying to get beryl working) you learn alot more too by breaking it.
I recomend Ubuntu as a great starting place for people that want to get into linux but are a bit nervous about the learning curve. A geat start can be found on this wiki here -> http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_Edgy
