Hey all, I am going to be a proud new owner of a macbook tomorrow. It is exciting for me to get a new comp and my first foray into the macworld. Any tips or good links that can help someone get accustomed to macs? Thanks in advance.

Instructions on how to get most out of a mac:
1) Set up hardware (If using macBook skip this step)
2) Go on internet and get linux cd images
3) Burn cd images
4) Wipe/buy new hard-drive
5) Install Linux
6) Enjoy
joke, have fun with your shiny mac

1. Become arragont
2. Realize it's not a computer, it's a social movement!.
3. Never EVER stop talking about how much better your Mac is than PCs.
4. Don't play games
5. Become unemployed
6. Get high
Just stereotypes, but have fun. I use a mac for work and love it, I highly recommend it. For home use I'm PC all the way.

Thats funny, for me, all my work and school is PC's. So I figured I'd get a mac for home. And now I can multi-task it as a PC anyways.
Thanks for the regards and jokes guys. I am definetly excited to see what the hell the hype is all about.

Yes, glad someone pointed out the addict part. Don't become one! I get annoyed as hell at the arrogant Mac fans.

Yea I'm one of those people who are split between macs and PCs. They both have their advantages in my opinion.

I'm sorry. I wish there was something I could of done. But its happened and we will all have to go on with our lives. Its what the majority would have wanted. :(

We own a mac and a pc at home, and my lady has accustomed herself to use both now :)
If the powerbook had a "natural" keyboard, she'd never touch the pc again. The only thing keeping her there sometimes is that darned keyboard... you know, the ones split in the middle, supposed to be more natural to write on... I get hand cramps using it...

I don't know. I am always afraid to try those free OS's (I'm assuming Ubuntu is free like Linux). They seem more unstable or something to me. It is a mental thing I guess.

Linux has never let me down, the only thing stopping me from running 100% linux etc is the software, Im just so used to firing up adobe products that I cant change to linux. But other than adobe's lack of support, I love linux.

Mandrake or Slackware may annoy with drivers, not Debian (Ubuntu). For example, Ubuntu accepts my ALi M5455 integrated sound card, while XP says "bug off" and my speakers don't make a god d4mn crack :puzzled: (speakers are OK, I tested them).

Total Linux N00b - can you run windows apps in Ubuntu?

March 28th, 2007, 03:16 PM
I suggest you get this neat app to run some windows software instead of using parallels or vmware its very good although the programs supported are limited I'm using it right now for office 2003 that way I can get rid of both parallels and vmware theyre both good but I just dont like the performance issues.

Well I got it. So far I am happy but I havn't had that much time to play with it. I'll crack into it tonight after work :D It's going to be exciting. But so far it is a little challenging to get used to. (I havn't though to myself in awhile, "how do I copy and paste?"). I have to get used to the whole not maximizing a window thing. Now I am in the process of downloading all the stuff I am used to. Gotta get an extra mouse...all that kinda stuff. I am probably going to go with a two button because the one button thing still kinda freaks me out...

Just think of the command key (apple logo on it) as the control key in windows thats its basic function command+c= copy basically everything else is the saame just think that the command key replaced control and your good to go.
Enjoy your new purchase.

If you like the trackpad but not the one click function just open up your system prefs and go to the trackpad settings. In there you can turn on a way of clicking with 2 fingers. But then again a mouse in my eyes will always win over a trackpad.

I think I am just going to use a normal old regualr 2 button usb mouse, thats the only thing I dont get. Why go from two to 1 button. 2 is pretty simple already. Oh ya...and maximizing....where is it? ha
grimdeath
March 30th, 2007, 12:10 PM
yeah maximizing is a pain you have to constantly keep resize them damn windows totally hate unless theres something I don't know about whoover has the info please indulge.
Did a search theres an app called stoplight more info here (http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=26597)

Ummm... maximize is actually the + symbol in the upper left corner. I'm not sure what you use your mac for but... get quicksilver, and textmate, if you do any type of web production work. also... take a look into automator (comes w/ osx). adium is prolly the best IM program for a mac (although none are that good IMO). Transmit for ftp. Check out Mail.appetizer for mail.app. and last but certainly not least.. get HandBrake :)

Ughh, another stereotypical PCuser thing to say. The standard apple mouse HAS THREE BUTTONS. it just looks like ONE button because it uses super duper touch sensitivity technology to determine which finger is pressing!!
oh, and it also has buttons on the side of the mouse you squeeze which you can program to do stuff.

I think hes talking about a real fullscreen maximize instead of the height maximize MacOSX does basically. Theres really no good IM programs for Mac none have all the features aMSN can do video but cant do audio, audium cant do video conferencing at all I hear the new ichat will have support for msn I'm looking forward to it.
As for ftp i just use flashfxp on crossover works great  as for email i just use outllok with crossover loving that neat app now that handbrake thingy im gonna have to search wtf thats for.

I can't figure out how to maximize the window with one click either. The '+' symbol makes it larger, but doesn't maximize it. I hate the mighty mouse as well. It's mighty crappy if you ask me. You have to use the keyboard and click to get the properties of a file. Also the delete key doesn't work half the time.
