Yesterday Firefox 1.5 downloaded an update and said it would install it when I restarted the browser. So I did so and it gave me an error along the lines of "software install failure". So I hit cancel and it brought it up again, so I hit retry and it brought it up once more. It turned out to be an endless loop and I had to shut down my computer to get rid of it.
Since version 1.5 no longer opened for me I downloaded version 2.0. This gave me the following error:
"Error opening file for writing: \r\n\r\nmathfontMTExtra.properties\r\n\r\nClick retry to try again, or \r\nCancel to stop the installation."
:h:
So now I cannot get either version of Firefox to work and was hoping someone here might have some insight for me.
Thanks!!!

Did you try uninstalling and reinstalling?

Your "endless loop" error happens to me everytime Firefox is updated. It sucks.
So what I always do is (as Penguin suggested) uninstall and reinstall it straight from their site... because I hate doing this I usually put off installing updates for weeks; I don't use Firefox much anymore, anyway.

the reason why is because you did not finished the process of installing or downloading.. icy penguin is right! try to reinstall the again but sure you clean up the registry of all firefox reg. use registry clean tools. to do so..

Here is what you do:
1) Open Control Panel
2) Add/Remove Programs
3) Click Fire-Fox
4) REMOVE
5) Use internet Explorer

After I got the initial error I used Add/Remove Programs to uninstall it. However, it still left all the files on my computer but was no longer visible in the Add/Remove Programs window. After all this, I could still actually open the browser but it seemed to be only half-functional and wouldn't load certain sites, such as gmail. So I obviously never got a clean uninstall and there are still fragments of the program on my computer...
Since uninstall was no longer an option I manually deleted the Mozilla Firefox folder from Program Files.
Sorry if this is a stupid question but is there a program in Windows to clean up the registry of any remaining Firefox remnants or do I have to use a third party software?
Thanks again!

Why not just use 2.0?

Like I said, v2.0 isn't installing for me either.

You'd probably have better luck posting on the Firefox support forums. MozillaZine or whatever its called.

did you delete the directory (Mozilla) after the uninstall. may have tried to keep currupt profile or something.

When I try to delete the Mozilla directory I get the following error message:
"Cannot delete mathfontMTExtra: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)."
And so the Mozilla directory still exists and it has folders in it still. But the majority of the files are gone, such as firefox.exe

Try deleting it in safe mode.

WIth the cyclic redundancy thing, try cleaning out your recycle bin and temp directories. It might work after doing that, also check to make sure nothing is read only. ;)

i've seen cyclic redundancy checks only on broken cds.;)
clear the temp folders, uninstall, clean the registry, reinstall;)

^ What hybrid101 said to do would probably be your best bet.
