I'm currently doing Computer Science and was just wondering if you had to choose a certain path to follow in your degree?
For us we have to make up our minds to either do software engineering or information systems. Software engineers get paid more but apparently there are more information system jobs around at the moment... ahhhhh what to choose?
Kitiara
June 8th, 2003, 04:55 PM
I was pretty lucky with mine, it was a modular degree. There were about 20 or so different modules to choose from each year, of which you had to do six over the course of that academic year.
The modules themselves covered a huge range of subjects. There was multimedia, music, graphics, programming... You name it. I wanted to do the more techy programming side, so I took modules like C++, Java and web design. :)
I was really annoyed that the year after I left they bought 50 Net Yaroze machines and introduced PlayStation programming. :sure:

I wanted to learn and then go and work for Square on Final Fantasy. :P
It was a good course though. The whole web thing was just taking off, so the HTML module I took was very basic. That's why I'm mostly self taught on all my web skills. :) But the Java and C++ and VB and all that, they were good to learn. :)

Sounds like you had a nice variety of subjects to choose from. Unfortunately we don't get that choice. If you want to do multimedia I'm pretty sure you have to be enrolled in a Bachelor of Digital Art. I've been trying to get into some animation and digital image courses for my elective but they require prerequisites and I can't fit them in which really sucks. Hmmm playstation programming, that would have been really cool :)

Playstation programming.
what like games or the console
Because PS2's are made on Linux (just to get up Microsoft’s nose)
Anyway that thing you said Kit about your degree not being worth the paper it's printed on, that may be how you feel about it but I bet it is good thing to have. When you go for a job most people don't care if you can make web sites like a pro or program NASA space rockets if you can't prove it you don't get anywhere.
So don't knock:sigh:

Basically I'm the web developer and designer for the company. I do churchill.com and all the other companies we own, like the insurance bits of Nationwide, CSG claims, NIG, Devitt, Inter... There's loads. also do all the banner advertising, online graphics work, intranets, extranets... I'm trying to build a shopping cart merchandising system at the moment as well. :beam:

Everyone else in eCommerce is a project manager - they write the specs and I make the pages, do the graphics etc. :) There's a development house over in India that deal with the transactional pages and the quotation engine, but otherwise, it's just little me. :beam:

oooh, trade secrets leaking out there. Any more gossip for us Kit? How about what the churchill dog gets up to at the weekends? From what I here he becomes a MRS churchill dog........
Kitiara
June 9th, 2003, 07:17 AM
Hehe. :)
It's no secret, there was a front page article in Insurance Times a while back about how we're getting bought by Direct Line. This was of course the first any of us employees had heard about it.
Managemtn were forced to issue a statement to us all, basically denying everything, but we don't believe that. They sent out another statement a fortnight ago saying that they can't make any comments on the rumours in case it affects share price. Which we take to mean that we <i>are</i> getting bought. Otherwise they'd have just said "no" and got it out of the way. Ah well.
I'm all for a red phone, me. :)
TheOrangeOne
June 9th, 2003, 07:20 AM
perhaps you could have a hybrid phone - dog thing. that would be funny!
Why is it that with big corporations, the employees are always the last to know about anything going on? True most of them probably don't care, but even so......
Kitiara
June 9th, 2003, 07:23 AM
We do care if it's our jobs on the line. :sigh:
Who knows though? Heh, we certainly don't. :) My proposal for the new website design is heading more and more towards red and white and phones. :P
TheOrangeOne
June 9th, 2003, 07:27 AM
its a red and white phone revolution! You could be the queen of opressed red and white phones everywhere! Why, with an army like that, you could take over the world!
Seriously though, is it likly to affect your job? If you do get taken over, will you have to join forces with the evil Direct-line webmaster (sorry, dont know your job title) or will you lose your job?
Kitiara
June 9th, 2003, 07:31 AM
Beats me. I seriously doubt that Churchill would just cease to exist, it's too big a company for that. It comes down to three possible options really.
One: We're currently owned by Credit Suisse. Direct Line buy us from them, and we carry on as normal.
Two: Direct Line buy us, and phase out the Churchill brand over time in which case we could have to join with their eCommerce dept.
Three: We get bought and fired.
Oh, and I suppose we could not get bought. So four options. Who knows, really. The board aren't giving us any clues, it's all just rumours. :)
TheOrangeOne
June 9th, 2003, 07:33 AM
'the board' = evil, no matter what the company is. I hate big companys because the guys at top 'earn' an insane amount of money.
I also Love big companies because you get greater job security and, in general, better training.
Grr.... Im sure you will be ok Kit, they wouldn't want to lose someone as great as you :)
Kitiara
June 9th, 2003, 07:39 AM
