Well I started on a new portfolio this month. Just about to add content and such, and wanted to get some opinions. :)
Will eventually put in the style switcher and text size changer. Also you can click on the headings to open/close them.
And just ignore the logo.
So here it is. (http://icypenguin.ca/ip2/index.php)
Thanksies. :)

Looks nice, however I actually if I can remember the old version I liked it better.... I think it used space a lot more efficiently and took up more of the screen. I'm not sure you really need the left bar as it looks completely different from the main site and almost like a flash menu...
Also, I think the title bars and heading bars have a bit too harsh of a contrast.... they hurt my eyes... Finally, the logo needs some work as well in clearness.
I say rework that other version you had earlier.

yeah, looks nice but i guess your font is TINY !!! it's really small, my eyes hurt.. i can hardly read it... and it looks a bit funny on widescreen... quite a big white space between the text and the menu ( using laptop )... but, well, it's quite nice ;)

The old version is here (http://icypenguin.ca/eng/html/).
Yeah once I was working on it I kinda realized it didn't manage space very good. I'll see if I can work on that - maybe centering the site.
The menu on the left was kind of meant to be secondary to the site - I was considering making it's position fixed - but might just end up taking the navigation part of the menu out.
Sorry about the text - will make the default size bigger. :D
And I will definitely tone down those header bars - just took a really good look at them now.

Hmm, i like it. But to me, it feels like the menu node and the content node aren't aesthetically connected. I do like the individual nodes, though. good work.

Maybe indent the blue subsections a little bit.

Too much space between the nav and content, and the text is a wee bit too small.
If you made the nav fixed, it would be nicer to navigate with. Right now it looks a bit plain without any graphics to break it apart. Try adding in some eyecandy to make it pop :)

I like the old one a lot better too. The font on the new one is TINEH, and the old one just is a lot more refreshing.

You've got a nice minimalistic design going here. But there are certain aspects which need to be improved on. Your menu is way too small. It's too hard to see with that current font size - and your users may miss it. The space between your menu and content is just too much. That's especially obvious on a widescreen monitor (as Fl4sh'er pointed out), and it looks awkward. Maybe you could move the content a bit in from the right so that it's not at the edge of the screen... that might make the space between the menu/content looking better. Try using a different font in your content area (this all right now reminds me of one of those Linux distro sites from a few years back).
Apart from that I like it. But looking at your old design, I personally think you should work on that one more, as it is the stronger out of the two. Good job though. :)

Already been said before, but space management is needed.

Pretty much finished now after changing a few things (stuff like the logo isn't done - German version also not done).
EDIT: Anyone know why my favicon is showing up all weird? It's just a couple colours on a white background in Photoshop and I just saved it as an ico...

(Spent hours last night trying to fix bugs in IE - what a joke).

Now the typo looks weak- like 1995 internet weak. The left aligned layout with the HUGE amout of whitespace is not balanced enough because there is too much space between the content on the left.
And the wholle "phrase"|"phrase" thing on titles is over used.
I'd really like to see more with that tealish blue you have though. I like that colour :)
