View Full Version : Moderator's Profiles
urbanscrawl
June 5th, 2003, 03:15 AM
Having been a longtime if only sometime visitor to the hallowed halls of kirupa.com, it has been patently obvious to me for some time now that there are a select few, the 'moderators', that are the body and soul behind all of the help people receive.
Everyone who has asked an even vaguely novel question here will have had some time and effort expended for them, for free, by one of this virtual A-Team.
I know there is the 'tell us about yourself' thread, but I thought that I'd suggest nevertheless that there be a page of moderator profiles - with a photo and details on each of the mods, so we have a better idea of who's giving us a hand when they do.

Looks like a cool festival... big though, nothing wrong bout that. i go to big festivals aswell. it's fun.
Graspop (http://www.graspop.com) is a bit smaller, but i like the music better. Only a mainstage and 2 marques on a field about as big as the main one in your pic. You tend to be a bit more tired at the end of the day cuz you are running around from band to band. while when i'm on werchter i usually spend the day lying on my lazy *ss listening to whatever band is playing , and occasionally relocating to go and see what's playing on another stage :)

I know, thats aggrivating me big time. It doesn't happen on my system, it doesn't happen at the direct URL, it doesn't happen on the html file that gets exported, it only happens here on the forum. I noticed it happens to comicGeeks footer as well. I have no clue whats up with it, but I don't think it is on my side.

All of the mod conversation actually takes place in Random. When you see a mod writing what seems to be a random post, you should understand that we have developed our language system. It's a very strange code that one must decipher - everything such as an image placed in a random location corresponds to something.

As far as other ideas for a moderators page go - I'm not sure, some toptips maybe? more photos? stuff about where you live? a list of flash sites you've worked on would definitely be good though.
I went to Glastonbury the Year of the Mud. It was insane. I mean, glastonbury is insane anyway but the people it attracts are always the wierdest people on earth. I know they've put an even more massive fence up so you can't climb in anymore, but both the times I went they hadn't done that and we just jumped the fence with everyone else. My god - when the music ends it's like all the worlds most ugly people wandering around one place. I'd say 50% of them are probably tripping and wandering what on earth they are doing there, most likely looking for either:
a) their friends,
b) their tent or
c) their mind.
I think I made it into all of the above categories for most of the festival.

ok, so you wanna learn more about the mods...well first off, i took a pic of myself so that you get an idea what i look like. i just got out of college, specifically Virginia Tech, first year as an engineer. um, i've been job surfing for the past month or so (stupid economy is against me), but have now landed a job with an internet company who interviewed me earlier today. i have made maybe one flash site that didn't even hit big a couple years ago during the Flash 4 age. i'm planning on making one over the summer to display all my experiments and such, but then again i always say i will make a site and end up not, but i'll actually try this time around. um, random fact, i'm a license-less 19-year old and i hate it, should get my license during this summer. what else...i'm not much of a designer, but more of a scripter. i can't make elegant websites for crap, but i can program like a mutha. i do actionscript, java, c++, c, vb, and some server-side which i'm not too good at.
um...i've been with kirupaforums since 2001 (methinks...). and i think i was kirupa's first mod (k, can you clarify?) after i hit my first 100th post. then i thought it was an automatic thing, which it was not at the time.
that's pretty much all the information i'm allowed to give.
lostinbeta
June 6th, 2003, 12:40 AM
Wow, ok, more info.
I live here in Philadelphia, PA and I hate it very much. I graduated high school 1 year ago and am currently neither employed (that economy against me statement goes here) or in college (again... economy). I first joined this forum July 23rd, 2002 which was 1 day after I started learning Flash actionscript. My very first post was a non-military clock tutorial I wrote in AS using my knowledge of Javascript which I had previously. The poorly written/badly coded clock tutorial can still be found here.. http://www.lostinbeta.com/experimental/clocktutorial.html .
After that I spent most of my time on the forums helping others more than asking questions, I found most of the answers I was looking for either through searching this site and/or forum, or google.com so I never had any big things I had to ask about, so instead I would help others with things I have learned.
Similar as Thor stated, I believe my skills are mainly in coding/scripting than design, but I do like to design. Even though I may not be too good at it, it helps me express myself as any other art piece would, so I enjoy it. The languages I currently know are Actionscript, HTML, CSS, Javascript, and very little DHTML and PHP. I want to learn C++, C#, and Java, but haven't gotten around to it, I don't want to overwhelm myself, I am still learning Actionscript, and I bump up my Javascript knowledge every now and then as well. I usually tend to learn languages fast though, I guess I have a knack or something ;)
Unlike Thor, Dan, David, Phil, Ilyas, Sbeener, Ren, Jubba, and any others I may have forgotten (sorry), I was not one of the original mods of this forum (back in the ezboard days), I signed up not too long after this forum became kirupaforum.com and used vBulletin. I can't remember how many people were modded before me after the forum started using vBulletin, but to make myself feel better I consider myself one of the originals AFTER the change. It's not as good, but it makes me feel better so back off! :P
Today I still continue learning new things all the time and helping others with anything that I can help with. I am also currently working on my very first fully flash site (only took me a year to get my act together!) and I am also planning on making a site to have my experiments on as open source files for others to learn from (which I have a feeling I will regret in the long run :P)

there isn't enough space to explain my past...
no one would read it anyway...
let's put it this way:
I've done a lot of diff things. I design websites now. I've been doing Flash since V2... Worked with Gen2 until MX killed it... Learning !@#$ MX syntax...
I work almost exclusively with Fireworks/Dreamweaver/Flash as my work apps.
My hair (what is still hanging in there) is brown with grey highlights. My eyes are brown with a red glossy tint to the whites. Turn Ons: Short Jamaican women Turn Offs: Intollerance.
Abzoid is my brother. We kept him in a closet most of his youth. We fed him jello with a sling shot... He learned comp prog from a guy who chiseled it out on a stone tablet...

I'm going to keep it simple and straight to the point, hopefully...
Things I like:
- Practicing my actionscripting, mastering the stop(); action is tough.
- Any type of animation, my favorites would be the old school cartoons like Steamboat Willy and the 80's Transformers.
- Sturgeon fishing up in Washington.
- Shooting pool, I'm a wannabe pool shark. :P
- Drawing, if I'm not writing with a pencil then I'll be drawing.
- Italian food, I'm drooling right now as I think about it.
- Video games, my one source for relieving stress.
- Barnes and Nobles, if I'm not at home or school then that's where I'm at.
- Slurpees, I need an occasion sugar high.
- My favorite type of art genre would be Surrealism. Anything abstract is food for my eyes.
- I enjoy tormenting Alex because he's the lil brother I never wanted.
Things I dislike:
- Being pushed around, I'm a nice guy up to a certain point.
- Garlic, I hate that stuff.
- Possums, they're just plain ugly.
- Others tormenting Alex because he's the lil brother that I never wanted and only I'm allowed to torment him.
As most of you know, I'm a very serious guy....wait, scratch that. I tend to joke around a lot....wait, scratch that too....aww heck nevermind.
That's about it. :P

We should have a mod battle one day, see who can ban the most members in an hour. You;d win hands down, Dan. :) I've never banned anyone, I am such a nice, friendly mod. :beam:
OK, more about me. I was a regular member of the old Kirupa Forum, but didn't get made a mod until... I can't remember actually. When was it? :sure: Anyway, I am one now and have been for a while. :)
I got my first computer when I was 11, which was the old Commodore Amiga. I've still got that in fact, and on occasions it still gets fired up. :)
I actually started programming when I was about 14 in RM Basic, as that's all my school had at the time. 4 years and a few exams later, I'd managed to learn Pascal, COBOL and C as well. Went to University for my Computer Science degree and added Java, Visual Basic, C++ and HTML to that list. Got into the whole web design thing through that, and got a job working for a magazine doing their site where I first beheld the marvels of Flash. I think if I learn any more programming languages my head will explode. :)
Now I work for Churchill Insurance (yes, the one with the dog. I know), where I make all sorts of web pages, games and Flash based whatnots.
I live in Rainham, which is a nice little part of Kent in the South East of England. I spend my free time watching and playing football (I play right midfield, although pretty badly if I'm honest), hustling at pool, watching X Files, Family Guy and Futurama, kicking arse at Unreal and Street Fighter and entertaining friends. Anything else I do is unprintable... :bad:
Any questions, please send a plain brown envelope to the following address... :beam:
