Is there anyway to prevent Flash from publishing the modified file with my fonts instead?

If you are in contact with the person who created the FLA and both of you are on PCs, I may have a solution.

unfortunately it is the Mac vs. PC divide, the font is AvanteGarde Bold and it appears Century Gothic is a close rendition, which I did choose as my substitute. I am still seeing AvantGarde in the text dialog however. So when I publish, which will it use?

It will use the font you chose as a substitute. (I believe)

you can convert fonts from Mac to PC
I do it with my my machines, all my mac fonts are converted to PC and all PC fonts are converted to mac to keep them in sync

it will publish your font (substitute font), however if you set a substitute font and the other person will read in your edited .fla he/shell have the avant garde font set back automaticly.
but to be sure you can always install the avantgarde font. you can pm me if you need it as i have the font.
