Creating Styles for the Forums

Hey everyone,
A few have asked me for information on how to create new styles for the forums. All you need to do is modify the header and footer colors and I will take care of the body colors, etc. I have included the default blue style for you to mess around with:

Feel free to add background patterns, etc. as long as the file size for either the header or footer doesn't exceed 15k. Feel free to modify the logo, buttons, etc.

I'll try to include as many styles you all upload with some deliberation among the moderators so that the selection is more fair.

Please PM me once you have finished your style. I do not check this thread often.

Hehe, no problem ;) I usually have these updates done within a day or so, but as Nali mentioned a few posts above, I've been able to make any major changes to the site or forums.

Asphalt, have you considered adding some tiny graphics or something in the colors to make it a little more unique. The past few styles that were simple color changes were rejected because they resembled all the other styles. Use your creativity - you are a design/art/video guy ;)

Actually let me take back the statement about graphics :) It doesn't have to be graphics, but it has to be different than the simple rectangular blocks, etc. with a different color variation. The ones submitted now are looking really nice and unique!

before i work on the header. Tell me what you guys think of this footer. Is it too dark, or just bad, or red/black clashing, or whatever. Just need an opinion or 20.

ai - it's a little too dark, and morse is working on something very similar to this :-( Also, the MT logo looks odd in the white background thing. We already have plenty of black/dark variations =)

it can be graphics also jubba - it doesn't have to just be graphics, it can be anything unique and fun ;) Ethan, your's is great - as Kit mentioned it will be added shortly. Just one minor quibble, was the text in the footer intentionally meant to be blurred. Also, the MediaTemple logo doesn't open a new link when I click - that may need to be fixed =)

twoof your things in the footer need to be changed a bit. they didn't have transparent backgrounds, and I don't have that font. :P i didn't have the mt font either, but since it didn't really have to match anything, I just used something else.

i bet it's a bad sign when it's too big as a zipped pair of .fla's...

here's the header in .swf form. if you want it in .fla I'll need to email it or something.

2 problems :)

The trogdor one opens, then it immediately shrinks down to show only the little icon next to the word kirupa.

Also, you put the .swf and not the .fla in the one with the messed up buttons.

Just add stuff to them, no need to change the AS at all (i don't think).

Hey everyone!
I tried adding the styles, but I noticed some last minute discrepancies.

Fluid - changing the background color to something other than white seems quite difficult in vB. Each little template area they have has their own color, and the results of which look quite bad. Would it be possible for you to change your header and footer to have a white background instead?

Aislin - I'll have pomeg added shortly. Your moon submission is too dark; some of the text is not legible.

EthanM - I am not able to get the links in your header in em_source to work. The trogdor one is great, but I need a footer animation as well :)

Well I think I would want to stick with white, but can other things be changed? such as the message footers (where it says "all times are GMT -6 hours blah blah) I want that to be red.

I was also wondering if you could change the tint that ever other message is in. Currently mine is light blue and white. I think that should be gray.

Now that I really think about the background, it would almost have to be black because the footer and header backgrounds are black.

I don't know. This is my first style. What do you think?

Well I'll try a few color combinations, and we can easily change between other styles once the style gets added to the forums :)

I think the colors should be the same as "black by thoriphes" but the headers should be a dark red instead of black.

Here is my new style, its kinda different I hope u like it. I have one more made, but I haven't done the footer for it. Here both vjay and thomas(other kirupaiites from my work) have started on new styles,vijays like usual, great. Oh btw, I have a new feature, not new but kinda new on style, change skin on the header itself (only one skin). Clik the arrow to change the style. Hope u like it dude. There are 3 swfs. The swfs are called externally.

Kirupa, these colors look fine for the forum bg else u choose, dont make it too dark it will be very harsh and cannot be viewed properly.:) Choose lighter colors, or stay with grey color style for the bg:)

Hey Jay!
The problem with changing the forum style is that the URL for the modified SWF may not always work when the user is in random sections of the forum away from the default directory. Also, the changes won't stick. Once the page refreshes, the user will simply see the default style again anyway.

I really like the footer_6 gray colors :)

The only, itty-bitty complaint I have is that the left & right sides seem cut-off... like they're missing a border, or something....

Well, I would just perhaps cut the sides of the SWFs a bit, and add a little bevel, and an outline, so it matches the top...

I'll try to add it sometime tomorrow vulcan :) It takes me about 15 mins to add each of your style (you provided the color schemes so that makes it a lot easier), and about 30 mins to add everyone else's styles, so the only time I have to do that is on the weekends.

Hopefully I will finish a lot of this work by Monday.

and no scripts to update them if they are supplied in .zip.

There is no easier way :) I wish there were an easier way to get the styles up, but I really do need to work on a unified set of guidelines for easily creating styles, etc. I know there is an easy way where I can just modify the CSS instead, and therefore, give the style creators access to modifying the CSS also.

The alt info isn't too difficult for me vulcan. I simply use the Color Picker tool and point it to a screenshot of the style. Thanks for attempting to make it easier though!

Vulcan - you will need to change the style in your User CP. The small trick with the drop down menu is just a temporary (cookie based maybe?) fix. Changing your value in the User CP actually makes your selection permanent :)

Also, always feel free to PM me! I try to respond to PMs within a few minutes after I receive them, and that usually saves me the trouble of going through numerous threads hehe.

Thanks a bunch vulcan. I know I am going to sound like a pain right now, but the IRC link isn't linked in the footer animations. Would it be possible for you to udpate the Orange style's footer with that. I'm planning on adding the Orange one first because we don't have anything Orange-colored on the forums :)



Also, would it be possible for you to tell me width and height of the header and footers? I can't figure it out by looking a the SWF at this moment.

not sure if this is the right spot for this question, but what happened to the older themes? Specifically, Tan by Lostinbeta?Those themes used the old footer layout that do not include the extra information that the current footer and header use. Therefore, I have decided to not use them. Only skins using the new footer and header templates will be used ;)

Time permitting, I may create a few more styles, but my schedule is pretty bleak for the next few weeks ;)

It's random, but you are free to delete the "blank" movie clip and the associated code from the timeline :)

Hey Kirupa I Actually Spent an hour or two making a skin rather than 5 - 10 minutes. :D Its nothing big just a normal theme.

Mx - the file sizes are great. The 20k limit is per footer and header. It isn't the total file size, so you are in the clear. The footer text is still tough to see. A lot of the text is still not viewable because of the same blue-ish colors. Try increasing the contrast, to borrow from Emeril, up a notch! :P

wipe - sorry about that; I had you mistaken with mxnecro. Mx came up with the halo idea first. I don't think you can "borrow" his idea at this point :)

Wipe that whould work if i din't finish it already. i've fixed the font coloring in sacrifice of 7 kbs :cap: i tried inserting the Halo theme into the File but that raised the size rediculously. so i'm just gonna keep this simple nothing insane or anything :P

Hey kirupa i figured that if mxnecro could make a halo skin then i could make something similar and not just have my halo skin go to waste... anyways i decided to make a counterstrike skin. if you dont know what counterstrike is its a very popular game that a ton of peeps like to play. dark by morse is the new style added a few seconds earlier :) It's a LOT darker than all of the other styles, so you may like the change.

Replaced the old files with the new. You may have to empty your cache to see it. If it doesn't work, I'll rename the files and point to the renamed version in an attempt to bypass the caching issue :egg:

The drop-down menu found on all the pages is a temporary cookie variable. Using the above link alters the DB entry for your profile, so that is permanent :)

lol this is funny kirupa, im refreshing the page continuesly seeing the colour experimenting your doing, if you can change the outlines around the box's from that light light grey try change them to black, as i have black edging on the swf header & footer...

Hey there Kirupa - I fouind this really nice skin for VBulletin 3... I've got absolutely no knowledge of making styles for the forum... so I don't know if it'll work or not :)
It's called AquaSoft and was being distributed freely at Aqua-Soft.org

I've tried in the past to install that skin (you requested it a while ago), and the problem is that it includes it's own versions of the templates that overwrite the templates used on this site for things such as QuickEdit, displaying which style a user is using, the Arcade, and other stuff like that.

Some of the modifications I added call a template from the PHP file itself, so I couldn't use this style without getting PHP parse errors calling for functions inside templates that did not exist - in this style :(

This style is a bit more elaborate than just adding a header and footer graphic/animation unfortunately haha.
