You use ubuntu right?

I highly suggest using automatix to install codecs and what not:

http://www.getautomatix.com/

For media players I have mplayer (it rocks my face off), totem, and vlc. I use rhythmbox for music. For ftp client I use gftp (it's available in synaptic). For torrents azureus is pretty darn good. I don't use P2P but I think 'frostwire' is like limewire. For code editing you might want to try gedit. I'm sure there are more powerful programs out there, but gedit is fine for the little bit of HTML that I do.

Edit: Here is what you can install in just a few simple clicks by using automatix.

How is wine number 55 its probably the most important program for linux users although it shows that your still dependent on a main os other than linux.

Def gonna want to install the Java stuff its very useful when people make quick programs or "tools"/small games.

And every linux person i know has xchat.

Azureus or Bittornado

You need to install your special keys to make them work with your media players. After that most players will work with them.

Code editors are by the bucket load, but I don't remember if any have syntax highlighting. Quanta, Nvu are the ones I remember by heart.

You could look at http://sourceforge.net and search around...
Optionally you could run a google site search based on http://www.linuxquestions.org/ with the words html editor syntax highlighting.
like so...
site:www.linuxquestions.org/ html editor code highlighting
Linux Questions has a really big forum so this is probably a question already answered there. :P

P2P - Frostwire is good. If you're on Ubuntu/Debian it's sudo apt-get install frostwire
Torrent - I use Bittornado, but there are so many.
Code editor - I usually use jEdit or emacs.
Media Player - I would highly recommend Amarok. What sort of keyboard do you use? There may already be some code to support them, or maybe your distro detects them automatically.
FTP client - I used to use gFTP, but it was unstable. Now I use an amazing Firefox plugin called FireFTP, which runs great under swiftfox.

To basically use WINE, I'll assume that you're on Ubuntu for this (I seem to remember a thread about you installing it), first install it:

$ sudo apt-get install wine

Then configure it:

$ winecfg

Just set the options to whatever you want. I recommend that you set the Default settings to Windows XP.

Now let's run your app under Wine:

$ wine appname.exe

If it doesn't work, post here and I'll help :thumb:
