not sure where to post this question really...
is there a font preview feature in adobe photoshop...you know, when you click to choose a font, instead of everything being listed by their title in times new roman, the fonts are listed in the actual font style. seems simple enough, but it's very annoying not having it (i haven't the slightest idea what "chonker" or "bamf" font looks like w/o a preview). right now, i just have to open up word and use the font preview feature in it--which just eats up more of my meager 256 mb of RAM :(

Not sure about Photoshop, but there are plenty of free font viewers that make it much easier to preview a font. For example, I've used this one with good results:

What I usually do is this.
1. Write some text.
2. select all the text.
3. Hit Cmd (ctrl)-H to hide the selection.
4. Click in the font selection window.
5. Use up and down arrows to cycle through fonts.

Oh, and you should definitely have some sort of font manager.
If I'm doing print work there is no need for me to have all my pixel fonts activated. Saves heaps of time on loading apps as well.

I use Extensis Suitcase myself. It's pretty good. You can categorize all your fonts in sets and have them activated as you need them.
I assume they make a windows version as well, if that's your platform.
