View Full Version : Recommend a Video Card for Windows Vista?

I'm thinking of Windows Vista and how my current video card will get crushed so bad. I have a Radeon 9200 right now, and the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor says it won't work with Aero.
I've got about around $100 to spend. A bit more or less is no problem. What's a good video card? I don't have PCI express. I'd also like to play CS, Splinter Cell, and do all that normal design stuff.
I'm totally out of the loop on this whole graphics card thing. What brand, what labels, whatever it's all just letters & numbers to me. Any suggestions, recommendations, advice, jokes, or monkeys anywhere remotely related to video cards, please post it :)

...edited significantly from a few paragraphs.
Don't upgrading a non PCI-E motherboard for Vista isn't gonna help you one bit.

My 9600 Pro works well also. Just make sure to get a DX9 compliant card with at least 128MB of video RAM.

If you have about $100, get a really good card next Black Friday. The wait will be worth it. My friend, last november, got a 512 mb card from Best Buy for $100. Now thats a deal.

My Nvidia GeForce 7950 works flawlessly on it with no conflicts at all and altho it's very pricey it's onboard memory of 1024mb let's me do anything forever with no sys stalls.

My Nvidia GeForce 7950 ...
the 7950 is PCI-E only.
follow what kirupa said, that should be good enough if you're looking for a minor upgrade just enough to support vista.

When is PCI to be done away with?

I'm curious as to when PCI is to be done away with altogether?
Personally I don'r even know why they even put floppys in machine's any more.

Are you serious? AGP is blown away by PCI express now ... I don't quite understand your question...and then there is PCI-e2 ...

Well really there's no point in Floppy Disks anymore, it's an old technology.
They can be usefull for some system tasks like flashing your BIOS (but nowdays you can do that other ways like with a CD).

Well I dunno, member "hasdan" said " the 7950 is PCI-E only." I took that to mean PCI was inferior. Yer prolly querying the wrong guy cause I'm st00pid. :rabbit:

PCI-E is better than PCI...

PCI itself is great - a lot better than ISA which it replaced. Video cards are unique in that unlike most of the expansion cards in your comp, video cards always need more power and more memory bandwidth. Your sound cards, lan cards, etc. can chug on PCI for a while because they still haven't gotten close to maxing out the capabilities of the regular PCI slots itself.

PCI-E is better than PCI...
Does that mean PCI-EE is even better? :rabbit:

If we're going into old tech land.
Wasn't there a slot once named EISA?
I admit that regular old PCI is still not out the door, but with PCI-E 1x they might figure a way to make those cards smaller.
Maybe then GPUs could get the dissipation they need.
Imagine a 8800 with silent dissipation.
A heatsink so large it needs a special set of support brackets to be installed in your computer box.
PCI-E started with 16 lanes and the new ones have 32 lanes.

Get GeForce 7300 GS (PCI-E), don't get AGP

I wonder
Well the 250 Zips used to be great for the smaller stuff ...it could have become the standard instead. Storing to CD everytime I mean sheesh. Well there's flash etc.
