I have a motherboard that connects to the CPU with a 400 mhz bus, and doesn't support HT. I currently have a 1.6 ghz pentium 4 with an 8kb L1 cache and a 256kb L2 cache.

I'm looking at buying a 3.0 ghz pentium 4 with a 16kb and 12kb L1 cache, and a 1mb L2 cache, and it has an 800 mhz bus.

I figure I'd get some improvement in performance because I'm nearly quadrupling the L1 and L2 caches, as well as increasing processor speed.

Will it run on my new computer if the fsb speeds are diffrent? Or will it just cause latency?

I'm thinking that due to the bigger L1 and L2 caches, the FSB latency will be less of a problem because the processor will have a smaller need to draw data from RAM.

I would buy a motherboard to match the new processor.

Cache helps a lot for the CPU's speed and with your current mobo specs i agree with Vexir upgrade both at the same time to see the nice improvement. Why arn't you going dual core, you will like the smoothness (if you have nice ram to match it and a good HD).

yep, save more. dualies are much better investments in the end(especially with vista coming next week:D

Lemme get my ideas straight.

You have a processor with old specs, and you think you can upgrade just the processor.
This is true; in principle; but even if the socket is compatible there are a few more quirks that could affect it.

We need more info to tell you the truth about this move.
It can be tried and tested or you can end up deep frying a lot of silicon.

Your motherboard must support the new processor line.
Everything else is true.

Let's imagine it's from a Celeron to a P4...
Then; if the motherboard supports both processors; you get a more responsive computer.
